Proposta de intervenção para a escarpa da Serra do Pilar

Abstract

The subject comes from a desire to understand the various postures and multiplicity of forms that shape a city, as well as to identify its complex problems. Acquire, in this case, and in the words of Manuel Mendes, knowledge about how Porto and Gaia, become such cities and how they are or want to be. The aim of this dissertation is to study the Gaia river bank between the D. Luís I Bridge and the Infante Bridge, from the cellars that appear in terraces below the Serra do Pilar Monastery, to the old ceramics factory, at Cais S. Nicolau, including them. It is an area that does not fulfill its true potential, its proximity to places of great importance in the city - the Oporto Ribeira area, the Cathedral and the Morro Garden in Gaia - and the unique value of its natural heritage - Serra do Pilar and all the lands that go down the slope until Douro River bank - give unique characteristics to a fragment of a city out of context in relation to its limits. Then comes the need to rethink the city, through a proposal of requalification of the spaces in question, an urban plan that intervenes in existing structures, creates new ones, returns these spaces to the city and integrates them bringing new reciprocal relations between the new and existing city.
