Abstract

The aim of this article is to summarise ideas from different authors regarding theemergence of school hygiene education and educational and health reforms in Portugal inthe early twentieth century. The study focuses on the period of the First Portuguese Republicin order to examine the circumstances that gave rise to the social hygiene movement and itsappropriation by republican discourse in Portugal. The article also looks at the role played by cityauthorities as part of the division of responsibilities in relation to education, taking as a case studythe activities of the City Council of Oporto during the period 1910-1926.
