Caminha - Espaço da Feira e do Mercado: relação da Cidade com a Frente do Rio

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to enhance the street trading space, in the context in which it is inserted, in Caminha, requalifying the market, as well as standardizing the design of the marginal included in the intervention zone. If in the past the terms of street fair and market were merged, with the development of cities and their economy, these terms became distinct. It is since the introduction of the currency, that trade increases, and having Mercantilism a major role in the city life, we see the space, which in the classical antiquity, served as a bridge of cultural and political meeting, for exchanging ideas, has become specialized. The market begins to take shape in the city, to have a space to settle. In the nineteenth century in order to store products, markets gained a fixed position in the urban design, many as we know them today. The Street Fair being a weekly commercial activity was often developed, in other urban areas, in empty spots of the urban network. Defending and qualifying the street fair space, as well as the market by offering infrastructure that are lacking, can introduce growth, diversity, selectivity and quality of what is sold. Aiming to combat, which is sometimes a misperception of this commercial activity. All architectural intervention will take into account the need for a marginal intervention in this city, requalifying it, while integrating the street fair and market spaces. The new qualified public space will allow a direct relationship between the center of Caminha and its river front.
