"A vida é um sopro". Da arquitetura para a pediatria oncológica

Abstract

This dissertation seeks to respond, through an architectural proposal, to some of the existing weaknesses in the daily lives of children undergoing cancer treatment and the framing of their families. The knowledge of the weaknesses of the spaces, and the experience of these people was acquired by self observation and scientific studies or books published by neuroscientists, psychologists, scientists, nurses, doctors, among others. The project that integrates the dissertation proposes a new way of experiencing and inhabiting the hospital environment that all children recognize as a dangerous place and associate it with pain. The project includes in its composition three areas, a clinic, a nursery and housing. The "Clinic" is the economic support of the project's viability and provides consultations, examinations and medical treatments. The nursery enables pediatric cancer patients to be able to maintain daily routines with the necessary clinical follow-up throughout their structure. The dwellings are temporary and are related to the clinical department and the nursery. The close relationships of these three areas allow the family to be united and the patient to be treated with all necessary medical care. The hospitalized patient's room is the link between the clinic, the room and the house. This project is the result of the recognition of the fragility of the operating conditions and experiences of the Oncology Pediatrics and of a sensitive design in view of the fragility of caring between life and death.
