| Abstract: | The present dissertation, which is entitled Architectural Symbiosis: Proposal for the expansion of the Architecture Faculty of Porto University by Álvaro Siza, is carried out in a theoretical-practical way. As the name suggests, the purpose of this work is to create a project that can become fully integrated into the building complex of the Architecture Faculty without turning incompatible with the pre-existent building, a work that adapts itself to the existent reality and tackles the current weaknesses in the faculty. In view of this aim an initial research to contextualize important elements is accomplished: a retrospective journey to the city of Porto history, the genesis and growth of Porto University and the life and work of architect Siza. These topics are considered major subjects that need to be studied in order to understand the whole conjuncture of the faculty and at the same time to offer a more substantiated answer to the proposed program. Identifying the problem was what prompted and steered the direction of this investigation, problem which is concerned with the inability of the existing facilities in FAUP to respond to the increasing number of students enrolled and who attend the courses available there. This weakness is evidenced by the own experience of the author as a student in this faculty, as well as by the data obtained from the results of a survey made to the students' community in the 2018/2019 school year. Part I of this dissertation deals with the topics described above seen as being essential for contextualizing the faculty, thus encompassing the theoretical component. The chapters that cover the practical component of this dissertation can be found in part II. This part consists of an analysis of the identified problem, followed by the presentation of the survey data. It is concluded with the presentation of a project proposal which in itself may incorporate a very pertinent solution to diminish or even extinguish the impact of the problem. The challenge will then be to consider how one can intervene in a project by an author such as Álvaro Siza without affecting it with one's intervention, finally achieving a perfect symbiosis and balance between the two pieces of work. |
| Description: | A presente dissertação, apresentada sob o título Simbiose Arquitetónica: Proposta de ampliação para a Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto de Álvaro Siza, é concebida numa vertente teórico-prática. Como o nome indica, o objetivo deste trabalho é o de criar um projeto que possa ser integrado no conjunto edificado da Faculdade de Arquitetura, sem entrar em conflito com a preexistência, mas respondendo às fragilidades atuais que se vivem na faculdade. Para tal, é realizada uma pesquisa inicial de contextualização: uma viagem retrospetiva da história da cidade do Porto, a génese e crescimento da Universidade do Porto e a vida e obra do arquiteto Siza. Estes tópicos constituem bases fulcrais que necessitam de ser estudadas para que se possa compreender toda a conjuntura da faculdade em questão e para que se possa oferecer uma resposta mais fundamentada ao programa proposto. A identificação do problema foi aquilo que impulsionou e dirigiu o rumo desta investigação, problema que se relaciona com a incapacidade das vigentes instalações da FAUP responderem ao cada vez maior número de estudantes inscritos e que frequentam os cursos aí disponíveis. Esta fragilidade é comprovada através da experiência própria da autora como aluna da faculdade, bem como pelos dados obtidos a partir dos resultados de um inquérito efetuado à comunidade estudantil referente ao ano letivo 2018/2019. A parte I deste ensaio é composta pelos tópicos acima descritos, sendo essenciais para a compreensão da vertente contextual da faculdade, e engloba a componente teórica. Na parte II encontra-se o capítulo que abrange a componente prática da dissertação. Esta parte é composta por uma análise da questão identificada, seguindo-se da exposição dos dados do inquérito e terminando com a apresentação de uma proposta de projeto, a qual poderá integrar em si própria uma solução bastante pertinente para diminuir, ou mesmo extinguir, o impacto do problema. O desafio será então perceber de que maneira se pode intervir numa obra de um autor como Álvaro Siza sem que esta intervenção afete o seu projeto conseguindo-se, assim, encontrar uma perfeita simbiose e equilíbrio entre as duas obras. |
