| Abstract: | More than 10.35 million people throughout the world are currently held in penal institutions, either as pre-trial detainees or convicted and sentenced inmates. Architecture has an undeniable role within the incarceration systems that shape and control the inmates' lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. However the formal outcome of the prison apparatus, based on a strategy of warehousing and control, does not serve to rehabilitate or deter. As a practice architecture can, simultaneously, be a mechanism for deconstructing the disciplinary and oppressive orientation of the prison as well as being an agent of the urgent reassessment of the function of this typology. This dissertation assembles a set of observations that have the prison as the center, moving through strategies and adjustments that may foster new approaches to design and regime. |
| Description: | Actualmente há mais de 10.35 milhões de pessoas detidas em instituições penais por todo o mundo, quer preventivamente quer em cumprimento de uma sentença. Neste paradigma a arquitectura desempenha um papel inquestionável dentro dos sistemas prisionais, moldando e controlando a vida dos reclusos vinte e quatro horas por dia, sete dias por semana. No entanto, o resultado formal dos dispositivos prisionais, baseado em estratégias de contenção e controlo, não favorece a dissuasão e impede os processos de reabilitação. Como prática a arquitectura pode, simultaneamente, ser mecanismo de desconstrução da orientação disciplinar e opressora da prisão e ser agente da urgente reavaliação da função desta tipologia. Esta dissertação reúne um conjunto de observações que têm a prisão como centro, movendo-se em torno de estratégias e ajustamentos que possam potenciar novas perspectivas de desenho e gestão. |
