Abstract

The proposal of the present work deals with the first social housing projects built in Luxembourg at the beginning of the 20th century. This analysis intends to offer a starting point on the framework of social architecture built in the country and in the European context since the beginning of industrialization. This dissertation explores the architectural legacy of social housing in Luxembourg, as it reflects a solution found to the deterioration of housing and health conditions in the cities, provoked by a fast an uncontrolled industrial evolution and demographic expansion. In order to analyze this subject, an investigation was made into the socio-cultural history of Europe to provide a contextualization on the theme of social housing that would frame the events that took place in Luxembourg. Subsequently the analysis was deepened in some built case studies that expose the luxembourgish case. The architecture of social housing is marked at the time by a new approach towards a housing that fits a social class of workers accustomed to a rural lifestyle. The choice of theme and the relationship with the country was sustained by my personal experience of life in Luxembourg and the interest in contributing to a better understanding of the history of the country's architecture. As main study material, there is information from municipal archives that, for the most part, is incomprehensibly uncataloged and unpublished. The final objective will be to give proper projection to these social housing projects, which at the moment lack an in-depth analysis and reflection that contributes to the enrichment of the architectural legacy of the country.
