A envolvente do Convento de Cristo em Tomar: Uma leitura sobre o lugar no tempo para uma proposta de regeneração urbana

Abstract

The Convent of Christ in Tomar, classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a monument of high architectural and spatial quality, revealing itself as an important icon of the History of Portugal and the History of Portuguese Architecture. Its surrounding has an important connotation in its History and, above all, in its characterization and image. Thus, this work has the objective of creating an opportunity for a complete, wide and comprehensive reading of the part comprised between the three surrounding hills of the Convent of Christ. For this, it will be crutial the definition of a landscape unit, due to a process of observation of the relation between this monument and its near and distant surroundings. This will be analyzed according to its transformations over time - from the beginnings of its occupation to the present - and its relationship with this monument - according to different approaches to the physical and visual continuity established between the interiors of the Convent and its landscape unit. Its purpose is useful for building a state of art about the subject, for solving problems and to point possible solutions.
