Liturgia e Arquitectura. Pensar um lugar para a liturgia: o aggiornamento como programa?

Abstract

Architecture and liturgy. Thinking a place for liturgy: the 'aggiornamento' as a programme? Is it difficult, for the contemporary man, to recognize the profound meaning of the form of a church, or of the liturgy? In the editorial of a journal dedicated to architecture, AV Monographs nr. 95, of 2002, under the generic title Sacred Spaces, Luis Fernando-Galiano considers the separation between liturgy and architecture as a landmark of the construction of the religious architecture in the 20th century. Nevertheless, this was not the purpose of the Liturgical Movement nor the one of the renewal process of the modern religious architecture. Liturgy and architecture found in this new vision of the world the motivation to undergo the 'aggiornamento' of the liturgical place. Despite the path drawn by the renewed liturgy established by the II Vatican Council, there has been a tendency to return, both in the form of space and of liturgy, to an image of the Church, eventually inadequate of her vocation in the world. It is in this context that we question the prospective character of the concepts of interiority, hospitality and community, which converge with a (permanent) process of returning to the originality of Christianism, thinking the way to combine that condition and that project into a programme to build new places.
