Colónias Agrícolas da Junta de Colonização Interna no concelho de Montalegre - Modos de habitar a ruralidade

Abstract

The present dissertation focuses on the analysis of the ways of inhabiting rurality, taking as object of study the model adopted by Junta de Colonização Interna [JCI], for the Barroso Agricultural Colony. Starting with exploring the context of the criation of the autonomous agency of JCI, inserted in the ultraconservative agrarian policies in Portugal, we try to understand the valorization of rurality for Estado Novo's government. The study is developed focusing on the inhabiting issue in the region of Trás-os-Montes, particularly in Barroso, where one of the main colonies developed by JCI is implanted. Here, the ways of life and the dwelling rural's question and their inherent problems are deepened - the settlements' implantation; housing and domestic space; the private life's issue, such as morality and intimacy - using the surveys of Rural Housing and Popular Architecture in Portugal, and the movement of Casa Portuguesa. The last point of development is the study of the housing model for Barroso, the colonization centers and the adopted model, focused on the "House" and the "Agricultural dependencies", which constitute it, ending with a reflexive analysis of its explicit and implicit details, its suitability for the place, and the coherence of the way of projecting during and authoritarian regime that exerted such influence in all areas of society.
