Abstract

The present thesis aims at the study of the architectural work of Arménio Losa and Cassiano Barbosa within the period in which they held a common architectural office, between 1943 and 1963 We´ll try to establish a relation between this corpus of projects with the quick transformations in Portuguese architectural culture that took place after the Second World War. These transformations allowed Portuguese Architecture to evolve from a status of delay concerning the application of the principles of the Modern Movement when compared with its European counterparts, to a synchrony with them in their critical revision. This study is also an attempt to show that this quick shift in architectural culture permitted the transformation from architectures of the Modern Movement in Portugal onto something that we can call Portuguese Modern architecture. We will also try to demonstrate that this movement, based on continuities of the local architectural tradition still remains as a cornerstone of contemporary Portuguese architectural practice.
