Title: Electronics Based Pumping Group Controller Board
Issue Date: 2018-07-13
Description: At CERN, the particle's experiments occur inside of vessels that must remain on a Ultra-High vacuum condition to avoid interaction between air molecules and circulating beams. To achieve that low level of pressure are used mobile pumping groups, widespread through several spots along the accelerator. These groups are composed by valves and pumps. The group's operation is regulated by a proper control process running, currently, on a PLC. The purpose of the thesis is to evaluate the reliability and feasibility of replacing the PLC by an alternative solution. The proposed architecture must assure electrical interface with the devices and support other features inherent to PLC, namely Profibus network. To satisfy such requirements, it was proposed an approach based on single board computer, namely BeagleBone platform. The process is implemented on a soft-PLC following the IEC61131 standard and the core unit is integrated on an electrical board designed which guarantees the isolation and electrical interface with the all physical equipment. Regarding Profibus issue, it has been studied an open source stack previous developed on an older project and its integration with soft-PLC running environment, CODESYS runtime.
