Title: Museus de arte contemporânea: clareza, escala e flexibilidade
Issue Date: 2017-11-15
Abstract: Nowadays the museum is no longer a building dedicated only to the education of the public. Instead it is also seen as a space for consumption and entertainment, which brings it closer to the typology of shopping malls. The functional diversification of museums may have contributed to this approach, therefore it is relevant to analyse the consequences and possible solutions as well as to verify the relationship between museums and models of consumption. In "From Invention to Convention in Architecture" Robert Venturi pointed out the main consequences of the functional diversification of museums: the spatial complexity, the remoteness of the art and the lack of institutional identity. In the same way he accounted the principal concepts that would allow the solution of this questions: clarity, scale and flexibility, even if the latter is less obvious. The analysis of Portuguese museums of contemporary art and the IKEA model based on the concepts mentioned above attempts to verify if the functional diversification leads to an approximation between museums and shopping malls. In fact, the comparison between the two shows some similarities and that the affinity between consumption and education can be balanced in order to enrich the museum, depending not only on the quantity of additional services but mainly also on how they affect the experience that the visitor will perceive. Accordingly, the architecture of the museum has to relate with the art that contains as well as to manage the different functions as a didactic, cultural, social and entertainer institution.
