| Abstract: | 'Contemporary Earthen Architecture: ways of perceiving and acting' proposes a revision of the established conceptions about the nature of 'earthen' projects and its architects. A revision considered urgent due to the persistence of a pre-established image associated to earthen architecture and the artificial standardization of its architects. This dissertation therefore pretends to undo a stereotyped view constructed around earthen architecture, a view which is only believed to represent a small fragment of the reality of this architecture. The term "earthen architecture' is already a generalization of an architecture defined only by the material it uses. This phenomenon does not exist in this dimensions with other building materials. For example, it is not common to address to 'concrete architecture' when referring to the Piscina das Marés from the Architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, neither to 'brick architecture' when mentioning the Town Hall of Säynätsalo from the Architect Alvar Aalto. Both projects are given credit not only for the material they use, but also for the architectonic attitude or the formal language the architect applies. An alternative way of defining the earthen architecture is thus needed. A way that truly recognizes architecture in earthen buildings, not exclusively construction. In order to achieve this point in the future, it is necessary to clarify the present situation. By outlining the actual situation of earthen architecture, we aim to shift awareness from the simple material earth to the architectural intention. This work proposes to study seven projects, which are illustrative of distinctive attitudes towards contemporary earthen architecture. The interpretation and identification of the main reasons behind the construction of the studied projects will be justified with the first part of this work, composed of two chapters. In the first chapter, the aim is to study the application of earth in architecture by understanding its different expressions, its history and its present. The purpose of the second chapter is to ellucidate how earth is applied in construction. In this way, studying earth as a building material is seen as another important point in drawing a picture of the present situation and attitudes regarding earthen architecture. Finally, the second part of this work, which integrates the third chapter, analyzes the different attitudes found in the seven earthen architecture case studies. With these three chapters, the goal is to further our understanding of the actual international panorama of earthen construction, as well as allowing a new approach towards this architecture. Besides of these purposes, this dissertation aims to be a source of knowledge for future studies about this subject and also assist architects considering to use earth as a building material. Finally, finding the reasons behind the choice of a certain material in a project has always fascinated me during my academic career, and this work is, in a certain way, a search of the reason behind the use of earth in contemporary architecture. |

Uma revisão que se considera urgente pela persistência de uma imagem pré-estabelecida da arquitetura em terra e pela uniformização artificial dos seus arquitetos. Deste modo, a presente dissertação tenciona desfazer a visão estereotipada que se construiu em volta da arquitetura em terra, uma visão que, hoje em dia, se acredita representar apenas um pequeno fragmento da realidade desta arquitetura. O próprio termo 'arquitetura em terra' já constitui, de certo modo, uma generalização, uma definição de uma arquitetura através do material que utiliza. Este fenómeno não se verifica, nestas dimensões, com outros materiais construtivos. Por exemplo, não é comum falar-se de 'arquitetura em betão' quando se pretende fazer referência à Piscina de Marés do Arquiteto Álvaro Siza Vieira, nem de 'arquitetura em tijolo maciço' quando se refere a Town Hall de Säynätsalo do Arquiteto Alvar Aalto. Ambos os projetos são valorizados não apenas pelo seu material construtivo, mas também pela atitude arquitetónica ou pela linguagem formal empregue pelos arquitetos. Torna-se então necessário caracterizar de outro modo a arquitetura em terra. Um modo que reconheça verdadeiramente uma arquitetura nas obras em terra, e não apenas uma mera construção. De forma a chegarmos a esse ponto no futuro, acredita-se na necessidade de clarificar o contexto atual. Ao definir a situação presente na arquitetura em terra, este trabalho procura sensibilizar que não é a terra em si mesma que define o projeto, mas um arquiteto, que pode utilizar o material com diferentes intenções. Propõe-se assim o estudo de sete projetos, ilustrativos de distintos modos de ver e de fazer arquitetura contemporânea em terra. A interpretação e identificação dos diferentes objetivos dos arquitetos ao conceber estes projetos será fundamentada pela primeira parte do trabalho, composta por dois capítulos. No primeiro capítulo, o objetivo será estudar a aplicação da terra na arquitetura através da compreensão das suas diferentes expressões, da sua história e da sua presença na atualidade. No segundo capítulo, procurar-se-á entender a aplicação da terra na construção. Neste sentido, o estudo do comportamento da terra enquanto material construtivo é considerado como mais um ponto importante para percecionar a situação presente e as atitudes relativas à arquitetura em terra. Na segunda parte do trabalho, formada pelo terceiro capítulo, serão então analisados os modos de ver e de fazer arquitetura contemporânea em terra presentes nos sete casos de estudo. Com estes três capítulos, pretende-se alargar a compreensão do panorama internacional atual da construção em terra e abrir caminho para uma nova abordagem desta arquitetura. Para além destes objetivos, espera-se que esta dissertação possa constituir uma fonte de informação para futuros estudos sobre o tema e, ainda, auxiliar os arquitetos que estejam a ponderar a utilização do material terra. Por último, encontrar as razões por trás da escolha de determinado material no projeto sempre me fascinou durante o meu percurso académico e este trabalho é, em certa medida, uma procura de justificação do porquê do uso do material terra na arquitetura contemporânea. |
