Um hotel a que o rio dá sentido

Abstract

A project for a Hotel on the shore of Douro River, at the base of the Serra do Pilar escarpment in Vila Nova de Gaia. Gifted in its location, it urges from the transformation of an industrial building (currently in ruin) and of its land abandoned to the mercy of the time, forgotten. The dissertation initially explores the analysis of the contexts that led to its current state and defined the intervention strategy of this place. One navigates in the interpretation of the dialogue of the Douro River and the two realities that conform it, Gaia and Porto. As a result of the understanding of the circumstances that led to the decharacterization of the original function of this place, the initial premise of the river as a means of circulation between shores is resumed in order to develop a proposal that fits these two entanglements. This investigation also focuses on an intervention in a unique place that tests a transformation on and under what the ruin suggests as an integral part of the proposal. It cultivates the dialogue and establishes new relations between the pre-existence left by time and the new limit that this project proposes. Therefore, a response is sought to the expectation around this old building, capable of transporting it to contemporaneity. Thus, the proposal focuses on an intervention that brings together these materials and unfolds the connection between the two shores along with the relationship around the ruin and the new program, the hotel to which the river gives meaning and name - Douro Sentido.
