Portugal, traditionally a country of emigration, has become a country that receives migrants. They first came from its former colonies, then from the entire world, in particular in recent years from Eastern Europe, a flow that has nothing to do with the Lusitanian world. This new situation has led to changes in public policies and repercussions on the labour market and the countrys development. Furthermore, specific emigration flows, largely temporary and seasonal, continue to exist, mainly among intra-European migrations. The transnational networks of Portuguese migrants, in particular for the migratory circulation within the European space, essentially for labour purposes, are a concrete reality. This article examines the singularity of Portugal and the prospects for migratory movements, taking into account the Portuguese demographic, institutional and economic contexts. These international migrations pose many political, cultural, demographic and economic challenges for the country.
