Title: Controlling Complex Multimedia Systems via Reflection and Ontologies

Abstract: Multimedia distributed services are complex systems andbecome to play an important role in many human activitiesover the past few years. As computer and communicationtechnologies evolve, there is an increasing demand formultimedia applications capable to deliver to end-users, theright content with the right format at the right moment. Toachieve this, the components that form the system must beinitially configured and, possibly, later on adapted to copewith changes in network conditions, users preferences andenvironment settings. Over the past years, research onmultimedia systems adaptation evolved from scatteredapproaches into integrated ones by combining informationfrom several layers of the OSI stack. This position paperproposes a novel cross-layer design approach for managingadaptation in multimedia distributed systems by combiningontologies and reflection.
