Title: Stiffness parameters of municipal solid waste

Abstract: This paper presents results of the deformabilityparameters of municipal solid waste (MSW) determinedthrough laboratory (oedometer and triaxial tests) and in situtests [standard penetration tests (SPT) and cone penetrationtests (CPT)], as well as by a monitoring system includingtopographic control marks, open-tube piezometers, earthand pore pressure cells and inclinometer tubes with magneticsettlement plates and spiders. The studied landfill islocated in a textile industry area, and was landfilled withsome direct waste (10 %) and mostly pre-treated waste(90 %, from composting and triage). The influence of: thewaste age, construction phase of the landfill and confiningstress on the results of stiffness modulus, lateral wastepressure coefficient at-rest (K0) and Poissons ratio (m) arepresented, as well as an attempt to establish correlations toestimate MSW stiffness modulus from SPT and CPT tests.The results indicate the increases of K0 and m with theaverage effective confining stresses during the first 2 yearsof the post-construction phase, reaching maximum valuesof 0.7 for K0 and 0.4 for m, and then decreasing graduallyuntil stabilizing at values of around 0.230.48 for K0 andaround 0.190.32 for m. The stiffness modulus valuesdetermined by different methods are consistent with eachother and corroborate the fact that typical values for MSWare low. These values are between 0.4 and 2 MPa for amean confinement stress of about 50 kPa, and tend toincrease linearly with the increase of the confinementstress. The correlations established with SPT and CPT testsare of the same type as usually proposed for granular soils;however, the constant values are significantly lower thanthe lowest values reported for normally consolidated sandysoils.
