Abstract

Despite growing concerns with construction quality, many recent buildings are clearly not up to standard as regards quality and durability. The lack of systematization of the available information originates errors and pathologies repeated several times.The Building Pathology Study Group - PATORREB has created a pathology catalogue available at www.patorreb.com, composed by a collection of reports that contain the description of the problem,the diagnostic methods used, the main causes and recommendations.The main goals of this dissertation are listed below: Analyze the economical importance of building pathology; Evaluate the pathology catalogues at an international level; Create new pathology reports to publish at www.patorreb.com; Propose and implement new functionalities in the website.The technical and economical importance of building pathology is analysed using a statistical approach in the first part of this study. A French database is used in order to study the pathologies frequencyand the repair costs.The international pathology catalogues are described in the second part. The Portuguese www.patorreb.com website is also presented in detail.The third part represents the original contribution of this dissertation. The different tasks carried out to improve the www.patorreb.com website are described, namely the creation of 16 reports related with mortars and the proposal of a "Bibliography Zone" and a "Terminology Zone".The pathology reports were produced under a protocol signed between the Building Pathology Study Group - PATORREB and the Portuguese Association of Manufacturers of Building Mortars -APFAC.KEYWORDS: Pathology, Costs, Catalogue, Reports, Bibliography, Terminology.
