Title: Diagnóstico das Condições de Ventilação em Edifícios de Habitação
Issue Date: 1999-07-28
Abstract: The building construction activity has shown a deficit in what concerns the sutdy and practical implementation of matters relating to the ventilation of the divisions, in particular, and the home, in general. This attitude contrasts with the increase of the knowledge in this area and even more with the development revealed in other areas. It is consequently essential to define rules with the aim of changing this situation, which obviously implies ruling on certain regulations and the quantification of required case-by-case standards. The basis of these dispositions should be a rigorous diagnosis of the existing situation. Natural ventilation is determined by physical phenomenon which are unequivocally quantifiable, although sometimes of great complexity due to the simplifications which must be adopted and the variables which must be analysed. The present kind of life and consequent homes usage, in connection with the fact that buildings are constructed continuously more airtight, lead to a reduction of the air renewal rates, of which the effects have repercussions on the quality of the interior ambience. The compliance with the incessantly higher requirement levels calls for an attentive investigation of these matters, and therefore, we have conceived an experimental analysis for the locations to be measured, with the purpose of quantifying those values, with the fundamental support of the appropriate equipment by the F.E.U.P. Construction Physics Lab. The measurement of the concentration profiles of a tracer gas, and the application of an adequate measurement method for the determination of air renewal rates, has enabled us to reach the values of ventilation flows in several divisions of residences, and led to conclusions on the existing ventilation conditions, based on the experimental results which were conducted. In parallel, several surveys were conducted, and extended research of a wide group of residential construction projects, with respect to the adopted ventilation, which also led to some conclusions about their characteristics. Key words: Ventilation, flow measurement, ventilation project, diagnosis
