Title: A Prototype for the Acquisition and Analysis of the 3D Mandibular Movement

Abstract: This paper presents the development of anew prototype system for acquisition and analysis ofthe 3D mandibular movement. In Dental Medicine,the study of the mandibular movement is veryimportant in oral rehabilitation treatments, since itallows the diagnosis of clinical pathologies in thetemporomandibular joints and therefore, it helpsmedical doctors to select the most adequate treatmentplan and its future assessment. In this work, a facialarc, commonly used in Dental Medicine, was adaptedto incorporate electromagnetic sensors to measure themovement of the mandible. Thus, some parts of thearc were redesigned, in order to ensure the bestcomfort for patients, and a compatible support for thesensors were designed. A complete new user interfacewas also developed to display and analyse the3D movement acquired. This software integrates aneural network algorithm to accomplish theconversion of the output voltage of the electromagneticsensors employed into 3D cartesian coordinates.The prototype developed reveals to be easy to use,comfortable for patients and capable of beingproduce at an affordable price.
