dc.description.abstractLiquid feed direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs)employing proton-exchange membranes (PEMs)are promising candidates for portable powerapplications [1]. However, the use of perfluorinatedmembranes as polymer electrolyte leadsto a significant decrease in the fuel cell Faradayefficiency due to methanol crossover [1]. Nonfluorinatedmembranes based on sulfonatedpoly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) have beenpresented as promising materials due to theirhigh proton conductivity [2]. Also, in order toimprove the membrane properties for DMFCapplications, the single-phase sPEEK polymerwas modified by the incorporation of zirconiumoxide (ZrO2), which decreases the methanolpermeation [3]. Furthermore, the membrane propertiesare also influenced by proper samplepre-treatment. The present study aims to characterizesPEEK membranes and to perform a criticalstudy regarding the pre-treatment effects onthe membrane properties. Nafion® 1135 (fromAldrich) was used as reference material.
