dc.description.abstractResidues from footwear roughing and carding operationsrepresent 515% (w/w) of the solid wastes generatedby shoe-making companies. These wastes aremainly composed by chromium tanned leather and solematerials, and are mostly land filled. Sometimes leachingtests show these wastes as hazardous due to chromiumin the leachate. This work aims at a more sustainableoption for these wastes by recycling them instyrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and acrylonitrile butadienerubber (NBR). Thus, they were charged with: (i)1 mm leather waste fibers in the range of 1025 partsper hundred parts of rubber (phr); and (ii) leather andsoles industrial carding and roughing wastes in therange of 20100 phr. The leather waste fibers-rubbercomposites tear strength is increased till 25 phr andboth tension and elongation at break decrease withinthe acceptable range till 12.5 phr for SBR and 15 phrfor NBR. In the case of leather and sole carding androughing wastes, composites tear strength increasestill 100 phr, and tension and elongation decrease withinthe acceptable range till 20 phr. The composite materialsat the end of their life cycle may be consideredinert or non-hazardous wastes.
