| Abstract: | Detecting and recognizing objects are two of the most important uses of vision systems in nature. In a highly industrialized and specialized society, it is not always sensible or feasible to rely solely on humans for the recognition of objects, both in the real world and in representations of it, such as digital pictures. The huge development in computing in recent years, particularly in mobile devices, has posed new possibilities and challenges for the use of the hardware present in smartphones, tablets and digital cameras. Some of the biggest advantages of these devices have to do with their increasing processing power and ability to take high definition photographs. This thesis explores some of the numerous algorithms and approaches that have been developed in this context, such as histrogram based (SIFT, SURF) and binary based descriptors (BRIEF, ORB) and quantization methods for local features (BOW, Fisher vector and vocabulary trees). Their main advantages and limitations are emphasized as a basis for the development of a mobile application for content-based image retrieval. |
