Title: Detection of cell nuclei on sequences of confocal microscopy images

Abstract: This paper presents a method to perform automateddetection of cell nuclei. The method starts with a filteringoperation aiming at enhancing the image areas that maycorrespond to nuclei. The enhanced image local maxima canbe associated with the potential locations of cell nuclei, butthe filter responses also give additional positionalinformation that can be related with nucleus borders, thusallowing the approximation of each nucleus contour by anellipse. Afterwards, an analysis of the detected areas allowstheir validation or removal, as well as the adjustment of thefinal contours in order to facilitate the splitting of somenuclei that were overlapped because they belong to differentcell layers.
