Title: Metallic prototypes for the pressure die casting industry

Abstract: Very useful engineering models for productdevelopment can be rapidly available using RapidPrototyping technologies. A diversity of industrialsectors can benefit from the use of thesetechnologies, through speed improvement in theproduct development phase and consequentlyminimising the time to market.Rapid Prototyping technologies also allow thedirect or indirect production of metallic prototypesto be used in the development of fully or semifunctionalproducts, like house ware, kitchen andbathroom taps, sand castings, die castings andcomponents to be produced by pressure diecasting for the automotive industry.It is the aim of this work to describe a 3 yearsexperience in the development of metallicconversion techniques, to supply functionalmetallic prototypes for different nationalcompanies. The advantages and thedisadvantages of some possible complementarytechnologies to obtain functional prototypes ofproducts that will be produced by pressure diecasting are presented. The "lost model" techniqueusing LOM, Thermoject, SLA "Quick Cast", and the"lost wax" will be compared in terms of accuracy,speed and costs, with techniques that use siliconeand the resin filled moulds, considering theproduction of pre-series of 3 to 50 prototypes.
