dc.description.abstractHerein, the results of a research program based in a laboratory study performed on three different types of soils, representative of Portuguese geotechnical reality and often available to be used in embankment construction. A physical and chemical characterization was performed on these soils, which were later submitted to a stabilization with three distinct quicklime (calcium oxide) contents: 1.5%, 2.5% and 4%. In order to evaluate the immediate changes, several characterization tests were performed: sieve analysis, determination of the consistency level, methylene blue, sand equivalent, solids density and PROCTOR and CBR compaction tests. Uniaxial compression tests were also performed at different ageing days in order to evaluate the improvement on the mechanical properties and its influence in the type of curing. The results show that, immediately after the addition of quicklime, the soils change their physical properties, namely their grading, plasticity and workability. They also show the influence of the type of curing on the development of compression strength, namely the increase of temperature on the acceleration of chemical reactions, as well as the existence of two distinct stages in the increase of the compression strength.
