Title: Emerging Portuguese Artists' Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence: an Exploration of Creativity, Authorship, Ethics, and Professional Sustainability
Issue Date: 2026-07-20
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly reshaping creative industries and raising questions about artistic practice, authorship, originality, ethics, and professional sustainability. This dissertation explores the impact of AI on emerging Portuguese artists, focusing on how they perceive, use, resist, and adapt to AI in their artistic work. It is motivated by the growing presence of AI in creative fields and by the need to understand how early-career Portuguese artists respond to these changes. The research uses a mixed-methods approach, combining a survey answered by 25 emerging Portuguese artists with semi-structured interviews conducted with 10 respondents from the survey. Together, these methods examine patterns of AI use and non-use, the factors behind attraction or resistance, perceptions of authorship and originality, ethical and legal concerns, and the economic pressures associated with AI in the creative market. A literature review was also used to frame the study within broader debates on generative AI, co-creativity, intellectual property, and the political economy of digital art. The findings show that emerging Portuguese artists do not respond to AI in a uniform way. Their attitudes range from selective adoption and cautious experimentation to deliberate refusal. AI is generally considered more acceptable when used for technical, administrative, or repetitive tasks, but becomes more controversial when it enters the core of creative decision-making or final artistic production. Concerns about authorship, originality, consent, copyright, and the devaluation of human labor strongly shape these responses. At the same time, AI is already influencing the economic environment in which these artists work, increasing pressure for faster and cheaper production while also creating limited opportunities for adaptation. Overall, the dissertation concludes that AI is not simply replacing artistic practice, but is being negotiated by emerging Portuguese artists through boundaries, critiques, and strategies of adaptation. Rather than making generalizable claims, this study offers an exploratory account of how a specific group of emerging artists understands and responds to AI in a rapidly changing creative landscape.
