| Title: | Sodium bicarbonate - Alternative buffer for amino resins |
| Issue Date: | 2026-02-24 |
| Abstract: | Sodium bicarbonate (SB) is used in various branches of industry, such as in dental and food industry applications. This compound has several beneficial properties for product storage. Amino resins are world-renowned due to applications in the wood-based production industry. Thus, there is a lot of research associated with additives that promote benefits in quality and stability of resins, which in turn will induce an increase in the quality of the desired product. The storage of amino resins has associated problems, such as loss of stability (due to high ambient temperature) and subsequent pre-curing in panel production. Thus, in this work, the possibility of the additive SB acting as a buffer agent in the storage stability of the resins was analyzed. In a first phase, sodium bicarbonate was incorporated into an industrial resin, prepared at Euroresinas - Indústrias Químicas SA (ER) in Sines. The complete analysis of each resin was carried out and then under standard conditions and pre-conditioning at 45/50 ºC in a greenhouse for one hour, particleboard (PB) was produced. Finally, the physical-mechanical analysis of each panel was carried out, as well as the concentration and emitted amounts of formaldehyde. These tests were carried out in addition to the monitoring of the storage stability of the resins. The two best resins were selected comparing to the results of the previous phase to start the second stage of the process. The amount of triethylamine (TEA) introduced was reduced. TEA is a pH buffer, and SB was studied as a substitute. Again, the complete analysis of the resins was carried out and PB were produced under standard conditions, making a variation in the pressing time (2 min and 5 min). For the last phase of this study, the incorporation of bicarbonate in the last step of urea addition in the resin synthesis was studied, and once again the complete analysis of the resin, production and characterization of the PB was carried out. The results obtained in the present study confirm the behavior of SB as a buffer agent. In addition to stabilizing the pH of amino resins for a longer period than the commercial resin, it delayed the aging of the resin with viscosity below 500 cP for more than ten days in tests at temperatures of 30 ºC and 35 ºC. SB favored the properties of the panels compared to the standard series with pre-packed particles (the lowest recorded value of internal bond was 0.39 N·mm-2). In addition, in the executed perforator and gas analysis tests, formaldehyde emissions were found below the limit established by class E1 (8.0 mg/100 godb and 3.5 mg·m-2·h-1, respectively). |
