In today's era of Industry 4.0, efficient management and optimization of warehouse operations are crucial for businesses to maintain a competitive edge. The purpose is to develop automation software for creating modern factory layouts used by the Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) that leverage the concepts of Digital Twin, real-time operations, and 2D/3D visualization technologies. It will also introduce the challenges faced using the 3D web technology format in the warehouse context and the need for a generic and versatile solution to accommodate multiple factories, including future facilities. The project aims to be implemented with Siemens, a global industrial automation and digitalization leader.
This project presents the design and integration of a 3D Visualization Tool for Warehouse Management Systems to enhance operational efficiency based on the application of the digital twin concept. Traditional WMS usually do not support intuitive and interactive 3D visualization, leading to slow and ineffective decision-making processes. This research solves those problems using advanced visualization technologies to create a dynamic and real-time representative model for warehouse environments. This involved recreating predefined GUI structures, after which the Three.js library was introduced for more advanced 3D rendering. The development of new dialogs, the adaption of the structure for JavaScript, the adaption of the 3D models, and real-time data exchange via REST API were the main activities done in the course of this implementation. While the integration was successful, several limitations were were realized on model configuration inaccuracies, specialized technical knowledge, and resource compatibility problems. This is mitigated by developing reusable modules for scalability and maintainability. Future work will focus on improving model accuracy and enhancing functionalities and documentation. The results prove the immense power 3D visualization has to potentially change warehouse management practices. Enabling this tool to become the future standard of efficiency and effectiveness within the subject area by addressing the limitations identified and considering future improvements.
