Queer TV: The Impact of Representation on the Portuguese LGBTQ+ Community

Abstract

Television plays a crucial role in people's lives, not only influencing individual opinion but also popular culture, as it reaches massive audiences. In this sense, portrayals and storylines of marginalized people are increasingly more important. Particularly pertinent is the portrayal of LGBTQ+ individuals, which not only serves as a way to represent their experiences but also, if done correctly, can challenge stereotypes and foster understanding amongst those outside of the community. However, beyond mere visibility, LGBTQ+ representation in media holds immense value as a formative resource for LGBTQ+ individuals themselves, especially in their developmental years. This paper explores the impact of representation on Portuguese television on the national LGBTQ+ community, examining how these affected their self-acceptance, self-esteem, sense of belonging and overall well-being. Through accounts from members of the LGBTQ+ community, these findings unveil a prevalent sentiment: the majority perceive the current representation as negative and stereotypical, an influence that has significantly impacted them. They believe that exposure to more LGBTQ+ characters while growing up could have helped them understand better their own identities.
