Issue Date: 2021-12-28
Abstract: The aim of the present thesis was to study the effects of a combined aerobic and strength training in fall risk (FR) in elderly. Additionally, we sought to study the correlations between physical activity, functional fitness, and FR. A group of 62 older adults (mean age = 69.02 ± 4.27 years) subdivided into experimental group (EG, n = 37) and control group (CG, n = 25) were evaluated before, 4.5 and 9 months after intervention in the following tests: body composition (DEXA, GE Medical System, USA, Lunar 8743); aerobic capacity (Oxycon Pro, Jaeger, Germany); muscular strength (Biodex System 2, USA); functional fitness (Fullerton Fitness Test); FR (Biodex Balance System, USA); The repeated measures ANOVA showed improvements in FR (EG vs. CG) (F (2,120) = 4.519; p = 0.013; h! " = 0.070), being this improvement noticeable after 4.5 months. Regarding the correlation study, a group of 170 older adults (mean age = 72.34 ± 6.70 years, 124 women) were evaluated in the following tests: anthropometry; functional fitness (Fullerton Fitness Test); FR (Performance Orientated Mobility Assessment); and physical activity (accelerometer GT1M, Actigraph, USA). The multiple linear regression model showed that older adults with greater motor agility (b = - 0.869; p < 0.001) or strength of the lower limbs (b = - 0.223; p = 0.041) had a lower FR. On the contrary, the more sedentary elderly (b = - 0.869; p < 0.001) and the older ones (b = - 0.223; p = 0.041) had a higher FR. After adjusting for sex, men with greater sedentary behaviour had a higher FR, while women with greater light physical activity had lower FR. We can conclude that participation in the combined aerobic and strength training program promoted benefits in FR. Age, motor agility and strength of the lower limbs seems to be good predictors of FR in elderly as well as sedentary behaviour and light physical activity levels in elderly men and women, respectively.
