Title: Experimental Assessment of 4G and 5G Technologies in Varied Propagation Scenarios
Issue Date: 2021-07-19
Description: The goal of this research project is to establish a performance comparison of two broadband cellular network technology: Fourth Generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE) versus Fifth Generation New Radio (5G NR). To establish said comparison and reach precise conclusions the impact of propagation phenomena such as path loss and shadowing on the reference signal received power (RSRP), reference signal received quality (RSRQ) and on Packet Data Convergence Protocol throughput will be evaluated. The work in this dissertation will revolve around data capture in thirteen different paths surrounding the base station which can be differentiated by its position regarding existing buildings: indoor, outdoor, mixed indoor-outdoor scenario and the path line of sight towards the base station: line of sight, shadow non line of sight, obstructed non line of site, mixed scenario. The way the data is captured is by using a smartphone held in hand, in front of person, at breast height. Then, a version of CentOS 7 from the faculty repository mirror is downloaded. Atmospheric conditions such as relative humidity and temperature are stored. During the whole duration of the test, information regarding RSRP, RSRQ and throughput is collected in the phone using specific software. The data is then processed plotting different graphics relating power, throughput and signal quality versus time and distance. Since the aforementioned information is not yet quantified, a series of linear regressions are calculated in order to extrapolate, based on the existing information, data for different distances in the same conditions.
