Title: Tracking Products in Production Lines
Issue Date: 2019-07-08
Description: Bosch Termotecnologia SA in Aveiro (AvP) is part of the Energy and Buildings Technology division inside the Bosch Group. In this division, it is categorized in the thermotechnology business segment, meaning it offers solutions for indoor climate, hot-water supply and industrial steam generation and energy conversion. Here, a specialized team works on the development of new processes of industrialization and industry 4.0. Naturally, reducing the production costs and optimizing the efficiency and the productivity of the industrial operations is of the utmost importance. More specifically, decreasing the time it takes some processes and procedures to execute, it is possible to save valuable time, representing a lower cost per product and an increase in production. On the production line that this dissertation project is aimed at, trolleys are used to move the product between stations and barcode readers used to identify the product between them, which is a common practice. However, by studying the time it takes for the bar code to be read (manual operation), it is possible to conclude that around 35 seconds (specific line and product) can be saved during the entire cycle of that product with a total possible time save of 177 minutes in a single day. Moreover, using new industry 4.0 concepts like the digital twin, we can further study and optimize the process by analysing product and line information stored in the manufacturing execution system (MES), retrieving useful information to improve the overall production process.
