Título: Development of an Autonomous Underwater Profiler

Descrição: In a ever changing world where most of the surface is covered by water, there is a need to understand, monitor and explore the oceans and rivers to have a better knowledge of our planet. Taking into account the difficulties of obtaining measurements in the water in a systematic way,autonomous vehicles were developed that allow to perform these tasks in a systematic and reliable way and with minimal human intervention. These vehicles must allow to acquire data in both horizontal and vertical planes and in zones that have different constrains. To gather a better knowledge of the water properties, appeared the need to have measures along the vertical profile of the water column to understand water properties variation with growing depth. An underwater profiler is a vehicle that moves predominantly along the vertical axis. This type of autonomous vehicle moves predominantly in the vertical column of water and drifts along the horizontal plane subjected to currents. This type of vehicle is particularly suitable to applications where the movement needed by the vehicle is predominantly vertical where these systems are more efficient because of their design that minimizes drag on the vertical direction. This work aims to develop a profiler using four thrusters to profile to depths of up to 200 m and implement controllers that allow to control the vehicle's pitch and roll using the four thrusters available.
