Sucessão no Tempo das Normas Portuguesas de Conflitos de Leis: Os Pilares de uma Ponte entre a História e o Direito Actual
Laureano, Abel
Direito intertemporal - Portugal
Direito internacional privado
The issue of outlining Intertemporal Law elicited different solution's viewpoints, carried out by jurisprudence and having natural influence on legislators. The impact of classical thought on the issue of the succession in time of Conflict of Laws is embodied, in the current Portuguese Law System, in a frame which reflects a choice made over the background of that controversy's scheme. As a result of a viewpoint chosen in the context of the aforesaid controversy about the nature of such conflicts' rules, the Portuguese Law outlined its regime of succession in time of those rules according, in our opinion, to the general rules of Portuguese Intertemporal Law. And the connection of the Portuguese solution to the classic controversy is easily understandable, particularly given the fact that such legal regime dates back from the sixties of the last century, with no further changes since then.

Some issues on quantification in consecutive clauses
Cunha, Luís Filipe
Leal, António
Silvano, Maria da Purificação
Faculdade de Letras
The sentences with consecutive clauses have been a controversial topic because not
only their syntactic status but also their semantic interpretation are confronted with many problems which give rise to different analysis. Our aim in this paper is to
propose a semantic analysis of finite subordinate consecutive sentences in European
Portuguese grounded on quantificational issues. In fact, quantification in consecutive sentences plays a very important role regarding their interpretation. The data suggest the existence of three different types of quantificational consecutive sentences corresponding to quantification over individuals (objects), quantification
over situations and quantification over properties. This division helps to explain some relevant restrictions related to the sort of linguistic 'triggers' of consecutive
structures and, in some cases, related to the classes of words that can occur with
these, to the nature of aspectual classes of situations of the main clause and to the type of nominal predicates involved in the quantification

A diluição do jornalismo no ciberjornalismo
Bastos, Helder
Jornalismo
Internet
Ciberjornalismo

Campaniforme: chronology, pottery, and contexts of a long term phenomenon in the Portuguese Douro Basin

Archaeology
This paper discusses the Campaniforme, or Bell Beaker, phenomenon in the lower Douro river basin, Portugal (Northwestern Iberian Peninsula) focusing on pottery. It analyses the style and respective
archaeological context of the ceramics as well as their geographic distribution and presents the absolute and relative chronology of about 50 sites. We highlight here four case studies and conclude that all styles are present classic Maritime (linear, herringbone), comb-geometric, Palmela/Ciempozuelos, AOC and mixed C/ZM styles and that these styles have grosso modo the same chronology, i.e., they are
dated to at least as old as the second quarter of the 3rd millennium BC.
Bell Beaker pottery continued to be used in the second half of the 3rd millennium BC in this region, making this phenomenon one of long duration. This paper also emphasizes the spatial segregation of the
use of Bell Beaker ceramics and its relation to ritualized social practices which would have been connected with identity management, regional conflicts, or marriage alliance.

Ninguém nos ensina como viver : Ana da Silva, The Raincoats e a urgência de (re)existir
Guerra, Paula
Faculdade de Letras
In this article we seek to respond to the question raised by Linda Nochlin "Why have there been no greatest women artists?"; adding to this question another: Why are female trajectories in the arts - and particularly in music - forgotten and/or made invisible? By stretching the question to the world of music, we will seek to understand what is at the root of this forgetfulness and/or invisibility and, consequently, of the secondary status of women/women's bands. Firstly, we will analyse the very invisibility that for decades affected the field of youth studies, in which women did not appear or appeared only as girlfriends, companions, groupies, a reality that only began to change in the mid-1980s. Next, we will carry out an identical exercise in the Portuguese reality, especially after the 25th of April 1974 regarding the participation of women as creators in the art world, with an emphasis on indie rock and punk. Finally, we focus our analysis on the understanding of the paradigmatic case of the music and illustrator Ana da Silva and her band The Raincoats - a band that is currently considered seminal in riot grrrl and postpunk, but had to face a lot of devaluations and/or omissions, which makes it, even today, considered as the next big thing by the media and practically unknown by the generality of the population.

The digital models of landform representation allow several types of geomorphological analysis, such as assessing prone areas to the mass movement. Among the data set that applied to elaborate such models, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology has stood out due to its capacity to represent in detail terrain specific characteristics. This work aimed to present a variety of studies based on LiDAR to evaluate slope instability and to describe an interpolation test of LiDAR raw data to generate a Digital Terrain Model considering different interpolation approaches, in an area affected by shallow landslides. The results show that the tool applied is efficient when combined Triangulation to Natural Neighbor methods.

De imagem em imagem
Martelo, Rosa Maria
Literatura portuguesa - Poesia - Estudos críticos
Fifty years ago, image played a matricial role in Portuguese poetry. In many different ways, poems valued forms of discursive experimentation where image was a source of knowledge, or even epiphany. Vision and insight were evaluated (Fiama) and, in other cases, visioning and the crisis of vision were combined (Luiza Neto Jorge). The aim was to think about "the core of the images" (again, Fiama) or to wait for "the gift of a single image", as Herberto Helder would later write in one of his poems. Looking back, recalling the years of Poesia 61, Gastão Cruz would sum up this inflexion in a few words: "we thought poetry was fed by images". Considering the countless meanings of the word "image", it is worth asking what these images were. What was the reason behind their significance? How did they work? What worlds were they supposed to find? These are the questions I will try to address, focusing on the "profuse", plural, condition of the poetic image even when it is thought as a single image (in the singular).

Language Learning Strategies and Oral Performance: A Case Study. This article presents the results of a quantitative analysis on the link between (1) the use of language learning strategies (LLS) and (2) the oral performance among beginner students of the Portuguese for Foreigners Course at University of Porto, in the 2014-2015 academic year. The findings are: there is a positive correlation, but not significant, between (1) and (2), and students with the best results in the oral assessment have higher means in the LLS use, use more LLS in high frequency level and over-perform on the use of specific LLS.

Information systems and patients' empowerment around patients' pathways: the French and the Portuguese scenarios
Bourret, Christian
Pestana, Olívia
Faculdade de Letras
In this work, the authors undertake a descriptive comparison of the French and Portuguese national information systems, especially related to recent developments towards patients management of their own data. It is clear that patients participation in their health management is growing worldwide and that it is crucial for their wellbeing. On the other hand, the citizens circulation in a professional or leisure context, may boost their use of international health information systems, as long as they are compatible with interoperability standards.Nevertheless, some ethical considerations have to be explored, as well as information security issues. They constitute important challenges to tackle in the future with cooperation at a regional, national and European level.

The cultural indicators literature recognizes them as the newest member of the
indicators family. In the perspective of understanding how its concept and application
occurs in the social reality, it is intended to comprehend the history through schools
and moves around the theme. Therefore, it is problematized this path starting from the
agents, institutions, temporalities and intentionalities in the indicators definition and
uses. It is concluded with the results presentation in the exploratory research made,
involving the bibliographic and documental survey, naming a framework of the lines of
the act and the exponents of investigation and cultural indicators use.

Social sciences
The article is a reflection on the legacy of cultural studies, and its contributions to contemporary social sciences. It is based on a conversation between the authors, with Dick Hebdige in the center, and revolves around the trajectory of this British professor, communicologist and semiologist, an outstanding student of Stuart Hall. It also reviews the history of the Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies of the University of Birmingham (CCCS), founded by Richard Hoggart in 1964 and active until its closure in 2002, especially during the stage directed by Stuart Hall, 1969 to 1979. The CCCS was the academic laboratory where British cultural studies emerged, of great influence internationally, with figures as relevant as Paul Willis and Angela McRobbie. Dick Hebdige was one of the center's most important figures, especially for his book Subculture, published in 1979, which reconstructs the history of British post-war youth subcultures. The article revolves around three central concepts - subculture, art and power - with youth in the center of the triangle.

This exploratory research has as its object of study the perceptions of young adults attending University Education in Portugal, about their practices of accessing and consuming of Internet and social media, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the consequences of the permanent connection to these formats for the development of the risk of behavioral
dependence. From a methodological point of view, questionnaire surveys were applied to a sample of 407 young university adults, with an average age of 19.6 years, attending public and private institutions. The results point to an increase in
dependence on the Internet during confinement. More than half of the respondents consider that the Internet is essential
at some times in their lives, in the same way that they confess that they feel some of the consequences of excessive use,
such as addiction to social networking sites or sleep disturbances

Disentangling pantomime from early sign in a new sign language: window into language evolution research

Faculdade de Letras
In this study, we aim to disentangle pantomime from early signs in a newly-born sign
language: Sao Tome and Principe Sign Language. Our results show that within 2 years
of their first contact with one another, a community of 100 participants interacting
everyday was able to build a shared language. The growth of linguistic systematicity,
which included a decrease in use of pantomime, reduction of the amplitude of signs and
an increase in articulation economy, showcases a learning, and social interaction process
that constitutes a continuum and not a cut-off system. The human cognitive system is
endowed with mechanisms for symbolization that allow the process of arbitrariness to
unfold and the expansion of linguistic complexity. Our study helps to clarify the role of
pantomime in a new sign language and how this role might be linked with language itself,
showing implications for language evolution research.

The present article is the initial result of fieldwork on design and spirituality in the scope of ongoing
doctoral research in design. The research has been developed with Lusophone 'quilombolas', Afro-
Brazilian and traditional family farming groups and communities from Brazil and Portugal, which present
implicit spiritually driven design management approaches. The project proposes that a spiritual dimension
should be a fundamental component of a design management strategy that is intended to be integral.
The first learning case was carried out in ethnographic format with the Association of Women Farmers
of Castelões (Associação das Mulheres Agricultoras de Castelões) in Portugal. The chosen methodology
was the decomposition of the design and spirituality concept from the thoughts of Papanek (1971, 1995),
Schumacher (1974), Walker (2011), Margolin (2014) and Escobar (2018). Components of spirituality were
identified to guide field data collection. Subsequently, these components were identified from the
participatory experience and participant observation with the artisans and analysed. In conclusion, it was
possible to conceive 'components' of a reinvented spirituality for today, 'Spirituality to Safeguard Life'.
These may support the development of a spiritually driven design management approach with
a Lusophone reference, entitled 'Integral Design Management'. It is planned to apply this approach
in academic, business, governmental, non-governmental and civil society environments. Through its
practice, it is intended to promote the implementation of transformative systems with values and
paradigm shifts for the recovery, flourishing and continuity of life.

Direito e ordem: da retórica literária à retórica jurídica
Malato, Maria Luísa
Faculdade de Letras
Objective: The analysis of the slogan "law and order" is related with the reading process
of literary texts or cinematographic texts, applying them to the process of reading legal
facts, highlighting the importance of the order of facts to the interpretation of facts.
Methodology: Several types of demonstration have been used: deductive arguments,
based on rhetorical studies, in Literature, Art and Law, on the distortion operated by
the order of factors; inductive arguments, which bring the legal analysis of discourses
closer to artistic discourses, which have always reflected the importance of the order of
the narrated factors; analogic arguments, presupposed by the omnipresence of faction in
human sciences; and authority arguments, mainly referring the importance of the
rhetorical work of a Spanish jurist, Francisco Puy.
Results: The essay underlines the importance of the order during the testimony or the
process in general, given its rhetorical effects of conformation and / or manipulation.
Contributions: It is believed that the two main contributions of this research are the
valorization of rhetorical studies in general (and of lawyers like Francisco Puy in
particular), as well as the appreciation of a humanistic education of jurists, so often
formed in the belief of this rhetorical neutrality of interpretation the facts

Leitmotiv: Forgotten women in Portuguese contemporary history I
Guerra, Paula
Faculdade de Letras

Social sciences
Paula Ferreira was the first woman to own a comic book shop
in Lisbon: O Mundo da Banda Desenhada [The World of Comics] in
the late 1970s. Having lived through the Salazar dictatorship
and the post-Salazar dictatorship period, Paula is a reference in
terms of cultures of resistance in Portugal. In a society divided
between cosmopolitanism and provincialism, women were
still relegated to a secondary role in relation to men. Paula
contested these positions and also revealed herself to be the
epitome of resistance and contestation, especially because she
did not give in to the normative and hegemonic aesthetics in
force. She remained faithful to her authenticity. This authenticity
paved the way for her subcultural female participation, gradually.
Thus, based on her narrative and documents - among which we
highlight her fanzine Leimotiv - Using a qualitative methodology,
we approach the different facets of Paula's insurgent resistance
through (i) the opening of a comic shop and the path she traced
between Portugal, London and the world; (ii) her pivotal role
in boosting an alternative punk scene linked to independent
publications, music, fashion, film, photography and nightlife; (iii)
her pioneering role in artistic fields such as design and fanzines,
with a content analysis of her fanzine, Leitmotiv, being the main
focus.

The article is about the practical and mutual influences of the intellectual and political elite relationships of Brazil and Portugal. It questions the Brazilians contribution not only on the renovation of political elite in Portugal in full conjuncture from 1890 to 1926, but also on the empathic process that permitted welcoming the Brazilian Republican experience as an interesting stimulus to Portuguese dynamic of consummate turning into republic in 1910.

Faculdade de Letras
The aim of this article is to study the archive of the chapter of the Porto See, its practices of organization and documentary conservation, from the medieval period to the end of the Old Regime. To this end, two realities will be crossed: the practical and the theoretical. The first was detected in the docu-mentation of varied nature and in certain instruments of access to information produced by the chapter. The second was taken from the Synodal Constitutions of the diocese of Porto, ordered by the bishops following the holding of synods. The various changes in the location of the archive within the cathedral space will also be observed, as well as the relationship between the capitular archive and the miter archive will be considered throughout the analyzed chronology

The novel 180 jours (2013) by the writer Isabelle Sorente narrates the change of
view of the animal cause - in this case that of pigs in the industrial context of a
slaughterhouse chain - as a painful mutation of the consciousness of humans on the
condition of animals, even as an unexpected solidarity within the living. Indeed, as an investigation for a seminar progresses, tragic and subtle links between men and
beasts resurface. #

In this article we will analyze the new challenges faced by the local cultural policiesin the city of Lisbon, as well as the cultural strategies carried out by the Municipalityof Lisbon. It is important in this context, and preliminarily, to do a brief framework - astate of the art -for an understanding of the Portuguese cultural policies since the majorlandmark of the Portuguese contemporary history: the Democratic Revolution of April25, 1974. Then, based on the report Estratégias para a cultura da cidade de Lisboa 2016,as well as on the Agendas Culturais de Lisboa for the year 2015, we will carry out adouble approach: first, a more general analysis of the reality of local cultural practices inLisbon; then we will take an sectoral approach of the Lisbon cultural field, so that we canmeasure all the answers and new challenges that have arisen in the Portuguese capital.

Unseen beauty: the persistence of the medieval in contemporary aesthetics = Beleza que não se vê: a persistência do medieval na estética contemporânea

The experience of beauty is no less mysterious for the aesthetician today than it was in the Middle Ages. Here I focus on the notion of 'unseen beauty' and how certain aspects of medieval philosophizing about the nature of beauty can still be of use for the contemporary aesthetician. I draw a comparison between some concepts that pervade the whole of the Medieval period - that there is a transcendent source of visible beauty, and that visible beauties function as images of the invisible beauty - with a modern conception of aesthetic experience, as it is expressed in authors like Clive Bell.

Um espelho é mais do que um espelho: as novas formas e linguagens da canção que protesta na contemporaneidade portuguesa
Guerra, Paula
Januário, Susana
Faculdade de Letras
This paper presents an approach of the (new) protest songs of two of the
most iconic Portuguese pop rock bands, from the 1980s to the present. This work has
a fundamental purpose based on a primordial heuristic principle, which consists in
demonstrate how the all kind of art forms in this particular case the pop rock music
are at the same time a subject and an object of social intervention, by demarcating
its own specific and defined space in the denunciation and disclosure of the social
problems and in the contestation, in the protest and in the revolt faced to social reality.
The approach of 39 songs of the bands Mão Morta and Xutos & Pontapés allows us
to analyze several demonstrations which have not only the purpose on denunciate
the reality, but also intend to speak/act for/in reality; in this case, the incitement
refers to the action, which is fundamental to demarcate a specific space: not only a
thematic producer but also a contemplative object (a mirror) of social reality. That
is why a mirror is more than a mirror it is the social reality: a denunciation and a
protest field, a field which is a creator of its own thematic/problematics; problematics
which are insurgents and demarcated because they agitate and transform reality,
by the lecture that they do on this reality and which constitutes simultaneously a
integrant elements of a collective identity that is a result of a significant process of
self-reflexivity.

History
This paper shows how the Portuguese nobility never had a significant territorial or political
expression, capable of contradicting the centralization policy of Portuguese kings. It starts with a
review of the evolution of the conquest and construction of the kingdom of Portugal, almost always
under the initiative of the crown, and continues with the means with which the Portuguese monarchs
imposed, from the beginning, a continued policy of strengthening their power. A study of the
Inquirições Gerais (General Inquiries), one of the most effective instruments used by the Portuguese
monarchs from the beginning of the thirteenth to the middle of the fourteenth century to evaluate
assets and control seignorial abuses, will help us to understand how the patrimony of the Portuguese
aristocracy was managed.

Cultura e património cultural da União Europeia: : realidades ou ficções do direito?
Laureano, Abel
Cultura europeia
Património cultural - Europa
The notions of "culture" and "cultural heritage" are theoretically difficult; international legal instruments usually waive generic definitions, limiting themselves to descriptions or to circumscribed definitions. The Treaties on the European Union follow these trends; so, in order to conclude whether there is a culture and/or cultural heritage of the European Union, one must analyze some topics: assess the existence of a Western cultural heritage; consider that Europe passed successively through a period of cultural Renaissance and European nationalisms; and find out about conditionings of a possible cultural area of the European Union. Due to its limitations and sinuosity, we conclude for the absence of a genuine culture or cultural heritage of the European Union.

O signo como substituição: da semiótica de Peirce a uma teoria morfogenética do simbólico
António Machuco Rosa

In this article we analyze the definition of sign proposed by modern semiotic and semiological theories. Particular emphasis will be placed on the theory of Charles S. Peirce who, following a long tradition, defined the sign as a triadic structure in which the sign is in the place of something absent, the object, and determines an interpretant. It is held that in this theory, as in the proposed by Saussure, the definition of the sign as something that replaces an absent thing, its object, involves a circularity. We argue that this circularity can be avoided by using the morphogenetic theory of René Girard. It is shown how the hypothesis of the founding victim in Girard's theory allows to understand the emergence of the sign, and to reconstruct, without circularity, the basic structure of the sign in Peirce and Saussure. Finally, it is shown how the totality of symbolic systems can be derived from the original substitution present in the founding victim, highlighting the process of substitution present in the most universal form of human culture, the ritual of sacrifice.

Transición tecnológica, sustentabilidad y ecoinnovación: el caso de las empresas brasileñas
Sperotto, Fernanda Queiroz
Tartaruga, Iván Gerardo Peyré
Faculdade de Letras
This research poses the need to explore technological alternatives that stimulate the necessary changes for the development of a
more sustainable social, economic, technical and environmental system.
With that in mind, and based on the case of Brazilian companies, this work
delves into the analysis of the potential of eco-innovations with the objective of identifying the differences observed in eco-innovative companies
(where innovation reduced its impact on the environment) and innovative
firms (which innovated, but did not observe such a change) that made
possible, in the case of the first, to outline specific characteristics and recognize strengths and flaws. To that end, special data from the Innovation
Survey (Pintec, in Portuguese) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and
Statistics was examined, considering three different dimensions: (i) basic
resources, (ii) innovative effort, and (iii) innovation results. Findings revealed significant differences between groups. The main distinction was
that eco-innovators performed better in all dimensions. In addition, this
group reported a greater ability to perceive obstacles to innovation and
the need to expand alternative sources of funding (public and private) and
cooperation networks

This article seeks to clarify the ways of regulating the work of Portuguese butchers in
the Late Middle Ages. It begins by underlining the enormous heterogeneity within the craft, the
existence of contradictory interests, and then recalling the various products in whose trade the
butchers were involved, with an emphasis on hides. Several laws and postures that regulate the
respective work are analyzed.

Subjective experiences are relational: implications for trauma research and therapy
Ciaunica, Anna
Faculdade de Letras
Open peer commentary on the article "Applying the Neurophenomenological Approach to the Study of Trauma: Theory and Practice Yochai Ataria, Mooli Lahad & Omer Horovitz The Study of Trauma" by Yochai Ataria, Mooli Lahad & Omer Horovitz. Abstract: While I applaud Ataria and colleagues' emphasis on the importance of "returning" to the phenomenology of disrupted subjective experiences, here I draw attention to the importance of second-person body-based dynamic engagements with others in bridging the gap between first- and third-person approaches in understanding traumatic experiences. To put it in a provocative slogan: the second person comes first. I will conclude by briefly outlining some implications for therapeutic interventions based on dynamic body-based engagements with others complementing the static, interview-based approaches.

Freud and the algorithm: neuropsychoanalysis as a framework to understand artificial general intelligence
Possati, Luca
Faculdade de Letras
The core hypothesis of this paper is that neuropsychoanalysis provides a new paradigm for artificial general intelligence (AGI). The AGI agenda could be greatly advanced if it were grounded in affective neuroscience and neuropsychoanalysis rather than cognitive science. Research in AGI has so far remained too cortical-centric; that is, it has privileged the activities of the cerebral cortex, the outermost part of our brain, and the main cognitive functions. Neuropsychoanalysis and affective neuroscience, on the other hand, affirm the centrality of emotions and affects-i.e., the subcortical area that represents the deepest and most ancient part of the brain in psychic life. The aim of this paper is to define some general design principles of an AGI system based on the brain/mind relationship model formulated in the works of Mark Solms and Jaak Panksepp. In particular, the paper analyzes Panksepp's seven effective systems and how they can be embedded into an AGI system through Judea Pearl's causal analysis. In the conclusions, the author explains why building a sub-cortical AGI is the best way to solve the problem of AI control. This paper is intended to be an original contribution to the discussion on AGI by elaborating positive arguments in favor of it.

Os caminhos das plantas: redes informais e auto-organizadas de produção e circulação de conhecimento no Império português
Conceição, Gisele Cristina da
Bracht, Fabiano
Faculdade de Letras
From the 1680s until the end of the eighteenth century, the Portuguese imperial
authorities increasingly focused on the South Atlantic and West Africa. However, this did
not mean the end of the circulation networks through which people, goods and knowledge
circulated and which, since the mid-sixteenth century, had connected Europe, America, Africa and Asia. Reconfigured and with a new gravitational centre, these networks
promoted the circulation of knowledge produced about the natural world. Due to the
great biotic variability of the imperial possessions, there was great interest on the part of
colonial agents in the virtually inexhaustible botanical diversity and its great economic
potential. Produced by a great diversity of agents, this knowledge circulated through the
complex networks, formal and informal, that constituted the imperial communication
channels. This article seeks to understand these mechanisms of production and circulation
of knowledge about plants, based on the action of individuals, both within informal
and self-organised networks and within official institutions, be they religious, political,
military or academic. In this sense, our main starting questions are: how were these
networks formed? To what social, geographical, cultural, political and epistemological
contexts were they related? What was their role in the circulation and production of
knowledge? To answer them, we will analyse the trajectories of several historical agents
who formed them, the type of knowledge they produced, and how they were articulated
with imperial institutions.

Os sais e as cinzas: dialéctica da anestesia na obra de José Miguel Silva

Portuguese literature, Humanities
Taking as its starting point a detailed analysis of the poem "Noite e nevoeiro - Alain Resnais (1955)", from the book Movimentos no Escuro (2005), in its discursive, documental and interartistic ramifications, this study seeks to undertake a critical reflection on the modalities of poetic resistance which have structured the work of José Miguel Silva (b. 1969) since his very first book (O Sino de Areia, 1999). It is intended that the empirical study favors a theoretical questioning of the complex correlations between poetry, trauma, testimony, historical effect and political position, based on the work of thinkers such as Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Rancière, Paul Ricoeur, Jacques Derrida, Giorgio Agamben or Dominick LaCapra, but also a historical-literary equating membership of the author and his poetics to a lineage of poetry in Portuguese where the "sense of the world" by Carlos Drummond de Andrade and the "ever vigilant conscience" of Jorge de Sena pontificate.

Languaging and learning in independent EFL study compared to collaborative pairwork
Sampson, Andrew
Faculdade de Letras
Covid-19 has meant an increase in the time language learners spend doing tasks alone, either at home or in socially distanced classrooms once characterised by collaborative pairwork. The present classroom study compares independent language task performance with collaborative pairwork in terms of Language-Related Episodes (LREs) and the learning of topicalised forms. A mixed-methods analysis suggests that while individuals engage in LREs to a similar extent as each learner in dyads, the additive effect of two learners means greater languaging in pairwork. While LRE resolution and cognitive engagement does not differ significantly between the two settings, test scores suggest that forms focussed on individually are more memorable than those discussed dyadically. Pedagogical recommendations are proposed for both independent study and pairwork.

La iconografía de San Bartolomé en el sepulcro de D. Pedro I (Monasterio de Alcobaça, Portugal)

Considered as two reference points of European gothic sculpture, the tombs of D. Pedro and Inês de Castro (c. 1360-1367) in the monastery of Alcobaça, Portugal, have been the subject of great attention and study since the end of the 19th century. The technical quality, the anonymity of their execution and the complexity of the iconographic programme of the two monuments has fuelled this fascination and led to many readings and interpretations. The recognition that the narrated themes follow a cohesive, conscious, thought out selection of a biographical nature has led scholars to privilege some of the narratives represented on the tombs considered rare in
Portuguese medieval iconography, including the Wheel of Life/Wheel of Fortune and the Last Judgement. However, these approaches have overlooked the detailed representation of the life and martyrdom of St Bartholomew. The purpose of this paper is precisely that: a thorough analysis of these episodes in conjunction with written sources and other contemporary works. The rarity of iconographic works referring to the life of St. Bartholomew in European medieval art equally justifies the interest shown in D. Pedro I's tomb.

Vacant shops are an important problem affecting urban areas today, particularly in the wake of the economic crisis. Most strategies to analyse and deal with this issue are related to economic and financial variables. However, the amount of research associating store geography and performance with urban morphology has increased over the past decade. Thus, this research tests the hypothesis that specific morphological features characterize vacant retail sites. Using four Portuguese cities as test-beds and Kernel density analysis to plot spatial patterns, vacant shops were for example positively correlated with low segment betweenness and negatively correlated with block area.

When facing the new challenges launched by the present financial cenarios, health information services in the context of hospitals can transform health information management in a way that facilitates not only progress in services, but also organizational success. We present a model of the (re) organization of information services in hospitals, having as its theoretical-epistemological reference, the post-custodial and informational paradigm of Information Science, which conveys a holistic view of information, with a direct effect on the organization of services.

The veterans' movement and First World War memory in Portugal (1918-33): between the Republic and Dictatorship
Correia, Sílvia
Faculdade de Letras
The lack of consensus regarding Portugal's participation in the First World War's European front, combined with the post-war political and economic crisis, highlights the difficulty of integrating a large number of mobilised men, mainly rural workers, who now found themselves unemployed and physically and psychologically traumatised. The return, reaction and insertion of soldiers would configure the social and political milieu in which, in the immediate aftermath of the war, the first images of the conflict were built, based on interactions between veterans and the political authorities, not always on an equal footing. This study will first seek to identify the context and external elements so as to trace a concrete and immediate profile of the veterans. Secondly, it will analyse the creation and intervention of associations - their active social 'intervention' - amidst their internal activities and attempts to shape public opinion - actively making demands - in order to influence State policy. Finally, this text will attempt to shed light on the relationship between veterans and contemporary political dynamics, especially keeping in mind the eventual militancy of their actions.

Oscars won by the Best Picture of the Year: an empirical analysis across the history of Academy Awards (1929-2023)
Saraiva, Miguel Marinho
Faculdade de Letras
Since 1929, 95 films have been crowned the Best Picture of the Year. Scholars and cinephiles yearly debate their merits and the legitimacy of one winning over the other, and extensive coverage is given by the media to the spectacle itself. But research is generally restricted to prediction models, or correlations with the winners' demographic variables. There have been few historical studies on the evolution of the concept of Best Picture throughout the ceremonies, measured through the number of nominations and Oscars won in the various categories. Using descriptive statistics and cluster analysis, this article traces that history, showing that such concept has changed with the decades, although it has a relatively cyclic nature. Today, the Best Picture is no longer the most nominated or awarded, and has a diminishing association to Best Director and technical categories. Instead, it is more thematically conscious (Best Screenplay), and favors actresses and supporting players.

This essay outlines a certain 20th century Oxonian tradition in epistemology, contrasting it with another line of thought set out by Michael Ayers. The tradition begins with Cook Wilson and the idea that knowing is never having evidence, no matter how strong. It takes a turn in J.L. Austin, introducing two ideas into philosophy: disjunctivism and occasion-sensitivity. The last section considers whether either can really live without the other. The first part of the essay is a general consideration of the relation between two forms of awareness: perceptual, and 'propositional' (awareness-that), and of how the first may furnish proof of the second. The second part considers Ayers' view of the relation, particularly as expressed in his idea of primary and secondary knowledge, and its relation to disjunctivism about knowledge.

Three anthropologists visited community murals in Boston, concentrating on the black and Latino neighborhoods of Roxbury, and Dorchester. With common interest in the ethnographic perspective, they moved toward a joint reflection on local murals. Our encounter with these murals drew on our previous ethnographic experience with festivals and neighborhood representation in Lisbon (GIC), with graffiti and street sports in Lisbon, New York, and Rio de Janeiro (LF), and with architecture, music, and urban planning in Lisbon and Boston (TS). We thus report on our resulting work in progress on a particular form of urban visual culture, community murals, that document, mediate, and represent local urban histories, places, and identities. These public works of art offer commentary on related dynamics of collective organization, of residential, economic, and ethnic segregation in the urban setting, inter-ethnic and inter-generational relations, and the role of youth in cultural continuity and change. The researchers concern is both with substantive cultural analysis of the murals, as well as with the serendipity, synergy, and collaboration they experienced in the field, that helped them draw on their past urban ethnographic experiences in order to focus on a new, common object for analysis.

Sentidos corporais e sentidos interiores: aproximação às representações da santidade feminina no século XVII em Portugal
Morujão, Isabel
Faculdade de Letras
This work aims to demonstrate how the model of mystical holiness of St.
Teresa marked the modes and forms of female monastic spirituality in Portugal. The
field of study is the universe of Portuguese Poor Clares from two different monasteries,
through a devoted biography of Soror Mariana do Evangelista, written at the end of the
17th century, and an autobiography written by Soror Clara do SS. Sacramento, by order
of her confessor.

Organizational innovation in the context of family farms: lean diagnosis

Family farming has been on the agenda worldwide. Portugal is no exception. Act No. 64/2018, published in 2018, establishes the Family Farming Statute. Its preponderance in food and in the sustainability of families and territories has been reinforced by the sustainable development paradigm. However, competitiveness constraints assigned to the production system is often seen as an obstacle. Combining the theoretical frameworks of integrated agriculture and work organizations, we offer a lean sociological perspective on family farms producing lettuce. We concluded that their production system is characterized by a set of innovative practices very close to a lean approach. However, there is room for improvements in a production system that seems to maintain a family-based workforce and traditional know-how.

Developing the studentŽs creativity and researching the relationship between creativity and shoolar achievement are actual concerns. Ths study wanted to research the impact of the "Supercreative" Program (Oliveira, 2015) in creative skills, in the classroom creative climate and in the academic achievement (mainly in oral and written expression). Participants were 70 students of 4th year of Angola schooling, corresponding 35 to the experimental group and 35 to the control group. There were pre and post test moments, being evaluated, in both, creativity, through a creative product (a text), the creative climate in classroom, through a scale validated to Portugal (Morais, Viana, Dias, Fleith & Alencar, 2019) and the academic achievement through an average score and the Portuguese language score. Results showed improvements statistically significant in the experimental group in all the variables. These improvements can be a stimulus to the promotion of creativity in the classroom, not only in Angola but also in other countries. Future implications of results are discussed.

Um esboço da evolução da segurança e defesa no processo de integração europeia
Laureano, Abel
Integração europeia
In the early initiatives of European integration, came up the idea of a common Western European defence; the ultimate projection of this desideratum has been materialized in the frustrated attempt of establishing the European Defence Community. A long period followed, during which the defence of Western Europe was entrusted almost exclusively to Americans, although, as years went by, gradually came back to the Europeans the idea of a (more or less) independent satisfaction of their defence needs. The Treaty of Lisbon, in line with the failed Constitutional Treaty and in sequence of several initiatives which had taken place over the years, came to provide for the so-called common security and defence policy of the European Union.

A utilização da aprendizagem cooperativa na formação inicial de professores: uma investigação qualitativa
Santos, Paulo Jorge
Rodrigues, Sónia Valente
Faculdade de Letras

Educational sciences
One criticism that crops up time and time again in the literature on initial teacher education
is the poor articulation between theory and practice. In this paper, we will address the
pedagogical approaches employed by teacher educators to overcome this shortcoming. Indeed,
the way future teachers are taught in the course of their training significantly affects the way
they will practice in the future. The concept of pedagogical isomorphism argues that education
should be based on the same strategies that the trainee teacher will use in the future with their
students. On this basis, we will describe a subject common to five master's courses at the
University of Porto, which uses cooperative learning as the main mode of pedagogical work, and
will analyse how students have perceived this experience through a qualitative methodology.
The results revealed that most students considered group work organized in a cooperative way
to be a positive experience and that the final classification obtained was fair considering the
individual investment for the collective effort. Likewise, they saw the application of cooperative
learning with students in primary and secondary education as viable. The results of this
investigation allow us to sustain that initial teacher education should privilege pedagogical
approaches that make visible the articulation between certain conceptual frameworks and their
concrete application at the level of teaching as a strategy to bring theory closer to practice in
teacher education.

The resistance of poetry, resistance in poetry

Literary criticism, Languages and Literature
In the last fifty years Portuguese poetry developed different forms of resistance, reacting not only to political, social and cultural circumstances, but also to a gradual process of devaluation of its place and role in the contemporary world. This study aims at determining and describing different models of resistance in (and of) poetry, by considering some of the poetics that marked Portuguese poetry from the 1960's to our days. Authors as different as Carlos de Oliveira, Luiza Neto Jorge, Herberto Helder, António Franco Alexandre, João Miguel Fernandes Jorge, Adília Lopes, Ana Luísa Amaral, Manuel de Freitas or José Miguel Silva bear in common the fact that they invest poetry with a function of resistance. What brings these authors together? What separates them? The answer to these questions may provide an insight into the notion of resistance in poetry as well as its articulation with the notion of the resistance of poetry.KEYWORDS: poetry, resistance, modernity, contemporaneity

Does corruption boost or harm firms' performance in developing and emerging economies? A firm‐level study

Faculdade de Letras
In the last decade, a growing number of studies have addressed the ongoing debate about whether corruption sands or greases the wheels of business at the firm level. This study revisits this debate and proposes a comprehensive theoretical framework to test whether corruption harms or boosts firm performance, as well as the extent to which this relationship is mediated by the countries institutional settings, the size and strategic behaviour of the firms, and market competition. Based on a sample of 21,250 firms located in 117 emerging and developing countries, and resorting to instrumental variable (IV) estimations, three main results were found: (a) regardless of the proxy used for corruption and firm performance, the former clearly harms the latter; (b) corruption greases the wheels of business for African firms but it sands the wheels for firms in Latin America, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Southern Asia; and (c) the negative impact of corruption on performance is mitigated for larger and exporting firms. Believing that the construction of existence is poetic and religious so that life fulfils itself and that the Portuguese way of thinking, more conceptional than conceptual, finds in the Thinker of the World to Be one of its clearest and deepest expressions, the reflexion suggested in this paper arises from the intimate relationship between poetry and love, highlighting the brotherly unity of the aesthetical, antropological, ethical and political dimensions when one thinks and lives a project of hope -for man and his common home- spun by the Kingdom of Spirit.

This paper analyzes several aspects of frutuoso Pereira's work Arte de gramatica, latina, portugueza, benedictina (Lisboa, 1636). Mainly issues that have to do with the textual tradition and authorship, as well as issues related to the Portuguese pedagogical context of the first half of the seventeenth century. It also analyzes the framing of the Arte de gramatica in the grammar current trends at the time, specifically, in the rationalist grammar and in the school grammar.

Advertising discourse is both a reflection of the context in which it is produced
and an agent of change upon it. In the present study, we analysed the advertisements in the
magazine Mundo Gráfico with the purpose of identifying some aspects of the Portuguese identity
of the regime Estado Novo, namely the national identity and the individual identity, of the
Portuguese man and woman of that time. Simultaneously, it was our purpose to identify the
discursive strategies involved in the construction of these identities, in particular strategies of
an enunciative-pragmatic nature, such as the identification of the enunciative voices in dialogue
in the advertisements. Still, we looked at ads as textual manifestations of a genre, briefly
identifying some of their characteristics.

The Anti-Diary: On Teolinda Gersão's Os Guarda-Chuva Cintilantes

To include a book in a certain genre implies that it conforms to previously
determined discursive constants. The originality of the work of Teolinda Gersão resides
precisely in its radical break with a genre of long-standing traditions and, at the same
time, in its explicit reference to a necessarily codified universe. If we are able to overcome the feeling of strangeness conveyed by the lack of obligatory markers (such as the
absence of years or months), the construction of a fragmented discourse, sinuous even,
gains relevance, and we can detect undeniable indicators of femininity. Life writing that
escapes the canon without however forgetting the flow and/or obsessions of a saying
of the mind, Teolinda Gersão's anti-diary is undoubtedly an example of a feminine trend
marked by heterodoxy and transgression

Pratiquer la présence : la fabuleuse vocation du musée-du-monde
Semedo, Alice
Faculdade de Letras
For the past three years, museums, like us, have existed in a completely unpredictable and changing world, face with new expectations and complex tasks to perform. The half-asleep world of museums has been confronted with a relatively lively debate on its reason for being and has been forced to face both moral dilemmas and economic difficulties. Despite this adversity, it seems promising that museums may become more ambitious, providing meaning both for themselves and the world. These aspirations seem to be a response to a growing feeling of ontological insecurity, often shown by a loss of meaning in actions, which is expressed in essential epistemological questionings. By dealing with these issues, I maintain that, if we believe that museums are open to the world, both affecting it and opening itself up to vulnerability, their capacity for action is linked to politics and ethical practices. This means that we must recognize that simultaneous action of two effects, which we will call presence and meaning, in order to incarnate an ethical and political project for museums which, by definition, is never completed.

Repenser les frontières des paysages urbains historiques: pratiques et discours sur la ville de Porto

This paper addresses the current patrimonialization process in the city of Porto through the case study of the "2nd Chance - Waking Up the Sleeping Giant" project (European URBACT III program, 2015-2020), compared with two previous urban rehabilitation projects; the Morro da Sé (2007- ) and the Cardosas (2008 - 2012). The paper first raises the question of how the legitimization of a European and cosmopolitan narrative can be translated locally into the valorisation of the heritage ; secondly, how does this enable the redefinition of a new model of urban regeneration whilst supporting the transition of the concept of historical centre to the urban historic landscape? The paper's approach is based on the Recommandation on the Historic Urban Landscape principles (Unesco, 2011), acknowledging the dynamic nature of the villages, as well as the Faro Convention's (2005) focus on human values within the broad and interdisciplinary concept of cultural heritage, and the Lisbon Charter's definition of urban rehabilitation (1995). With the concepts of "heritage community", "cosmpolitism" and "gentrification" and a critical approach to urban transformations, the paper identifies the various contributing actors related to such processes and their social impact locally.

Jornalismo regional e redes sociais: entre as novas oportunidades de participação e a apatia participativa?
Morais, Ricardo

Faculdade de Letras
Following a series of studies in recent years that has sought to evaluate the
mechanisms provided by the media for citizen participation, social networks,
particularly Facebook and Twitter, has been appointed as new participatory
spaces. This work wonders to what extent they can be as sources revitalizing
civic participation in the online public sphere. Social networking mechanisms
will be more attractive to receive citizens' participation? In the context of
regional press as well we try to understand how newspapers are present in
social networks, expanding opportunities for the exercise of active citizenship.
To achieve this place, we compare eight regional publications studied in the
project "Citizens' Agenda", sensing how they manage their presence on social
networks and how they actually represent a new possibility of participation.

Papeles tocantes al havito de Christo de Portugal: um códice português na Biblioteca Nacional de España
Lencart, Joana
Faculdade de Letras
Spanish libraries and archives contain extensive documentation relating to the Portuguese
Military Orders, as a result, among others, of the union of the two crowns between 1581 and 1640.
This paper will focus on a particular codex deposited in the Spanish National Library. It compiles a set
of documents related to the Order of Christ, both hand-written and printed, which were assembled in
the same codex. They were copied in the seventeenth century, but many date back to earlier times.
We will analyse their content, in an attempt to associate them with the historical context to which
they are connected. We also seek to relate them to general matters of the Military Orders, and to the
affairs of the Order of Christ, in particular.

Cartography
In Portugal, in the historical cartography of viticulture, there are two important phases in which the use of cartography was recurrent: the first was essentially at the beginning of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, when the surveys and publications of the base cartography were consolidated, until the fall of the monarchical regime; the second began with the phase of political affirmation of the Estado Novo, and ended in the fifties of the last century. In the context of the sectoral or productive sector corporate bodies created by the Estado Novo, the case of the Junta Nacional do Vinho (1937) is unavoidable. For her, the competences that were previously assigned to the Federação dos Viticultores do Centro e Sul de Portugal (1933) were transferred. It is precisely from this period that the initiatory example presented and analyzed here is substantiated by the publication in two volumes of the Contribuição para o Cadastro dos Vinhos Portugueses na Área de Influência da J. N. V., whose fieldwork began in 1939 and refers to date of 1942 in the face of both volumes, although it was actually printed in December 1943.This is the survey and analysis of soils, the chemical characteristics of musts, as well as organoleptic conditions, since defective practices in wine production are recurrent, which, in a context of predominance of small producers, would only be partially mitigated by creation, in the 50's, of the network of wineries cooperatives.

The door : tentames e andaimes [posfácio]
Sampaio, Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues Morgado
This translation of The Door (previously published in the original) attempts to make better known how committed Fernando Pessoa was, at the beginning of the twentieth century, to the writing of fictional texts. And how he also had a preference for non-canonical genres. This text demonstrates as well Pessoa's fascination with the themes of madness and perversion. The "Postcript" added to the translation follows on some previous readings of The Door and suggests new ways of interpreting and analyzing it.

Contested heritage and colonialism in Portugal: a state of cognitive dissonance
Carvalho, Sofia
Semedo, Alice
Faculdade de Letras
This article explores the concept of contested heritage, taking as a starting point several episodes recently presented by the Portuguese media in which heritage acted as a trigger for the public debate about Portuguese colonialism. We examine how the concepts of "contested heritage", "heritage dissonance", and "cognitive dissonance" can be defined, differentiated, and interconnected, concluding that contested heritage representing Portuguese colonialism functions as an expression of a cognitive dissonance state and, simultaneously, as a consonance-seeking process. In this regard, it is critical to emphasise how a cognitive dissonance state is active in the people involved in the contestation processes and not in the objects themselves. We argue that contested heritage should not be understood as "problems" to be "solved" but as pathways to reveal and deal with the complexity underneath: what is contested, who contests, and why they do so.

This article starts by recognizing elder abuse as a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. It showcases the diversity of theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence that have marked the analysis of this phenomenon in Portugal, a diversity which is believed to explain some of the inconsistencies that continue be present on the attempts of evaluating its' extent. The article is based on a systematic review of the literature both at a theoretical level, as well as at the level of the empirical studies carried out in Portugal.
