This paper presents an optimisation method for metal forming processes, especiallyfor forging process designs, using a finite element thermal-mechanical analysiscoupled with a genetic algorithm. The optimisation method has been developed forshape design of multi-stage forming processes. The shape design objective is tooptimise the process parameters in order to make the achieved final forging productto approach the desired one as much as possible. Demonstrating the computationalefficiency of the method a two-stage hot forging of an axisymmetric H-shapeproduct example is presented.
