dc.description.abstractVirtual instruments (VI), namely those designedusing LabView, are increasingly used to enable access toremote instruments over the web. In an academic context,such VIs may be used to build a remote workbench thatenables the students to carry out a laboratory task fromtheir homes. Remote workbenches, or simulationenvironments, are not meant to replace real labs, but ratherto complement them. They enable the students to continuetheir work in the lab, even after leaving the universitycampus. In most cases, a remote workbench constitutes areplica of what the student sees in a real workbench.However, VI interfaces may be designed to provide a muchricher educational experience, namely by embeddingformative assessme
