| Abstract: | The purpose of this study is to analyze three construction sites by the Brazilian architect Lucio Costa (1902-1998) summarizing the main aspects of his trajectory through the speculations in the scope of critical architecture while seeking the essence of his projectual attitude and the restlessness which guided him. It is fundamentally based on the buildings and the practical work of the architect which have been elaborated in the dissertation defense. This study seeks to show that, in spite of some changes which occurred during the course of his career, natural among all architects, the spatial and formal organization are clear and linked to the ability to effectively implement these aspects in the building, which Lucio Costa accomplished as a great architect. The dissertation, while it is a personal approach that intends to confirm that a good architectural design is one that is pinpointed on arbitrariness and in the meantime, the imposition of an individual desire, favoring the response of collective demands and a harmonious relationship to the context; the good architect does not impose his/her own logic on any given site, but is capable of leading with diverse constraints on this media, introducing quality to the building which is being designed. Based on this point of view, rationality and the course which have been triggered on a trajectory of architectural erudition and a commitment to the society which it was designed for have been sought in Costa's works. The study has been based on an investigative method, design paths, and the results from the lifelong professional life of Costa in understanding the complex process of creation, unveiling the references and tracing parallels whenever possible |
| Description: | Este trabalho pretende analisar três obras do arquitecto brasileiro Lucio Costa (1902-1998) sintetizando os aspectos principais de sua trajetória através de especulações no âmbito da crítica arquitectónica em busca da essência de sua atitude projectual e das inquietações que a orientaram. É fundamentalmente com base nos edifícios e no trabalho prático do arquitecto que se desenvolve a argumentação da dissertação. O presente estudo ambiciona mostrar que, apesar de algumas mudanças ao longo da sua carreira, naturais a todos os arquitectos, são claros os critérios de organização espacial e formal, aliados à capacidade de concretizar de forma eficaz e rigorosa na construção, que fizeram de Lucio Costa um arquitecto de referência. A dissertação enquanto uma aproximação pessoal pretende averiguar que o bom projecto de arquitectura é aquele que reduz a arbitrariedade, enquanto imposição de uma vontade individual, a favor da resposta a demandas colectivas e numa relação harmoniosa com o contexto; que o bom arquitecto não é aquele que impõe a sua lógica num determinado sítio, mas aquele capaz de lidar com os diversos constrangimentos deste meio, introduzindo qualidade ao edifício que se está a projectar. A partir deste ponto de vista, buscou-se na obra de Costa a racionalidade e o percurso que desencadearam uma trajectória de erudição arquitectónica e de compromisso com a sociedade para a qual projectou. O trabalho concretiza-se a partir da investigação do método, dos caminhos de projecto e resultados ao longo da vida profissional de Costa, compreendendo o complexo processo de criação, desobscurecendo as referências e traçando paralelos quando estes forem possíveis. |
