Issue Date: 2012-11-08
Abstract: The museum architecture, especially art museums, assumes today a central role redefining the urban iconography and dynamic, which reached its maximum of popularity between the cultural and political entities, particularly in the late 20th century. Starting from a general historical and international framework, this essay intends to understand the transformation processes that this typology suffered not just in the urban and social context, but also at functional and programmatic level. After the consolidation of the museum as a typology in the 16th century, closely following the evolution of the Man and his History and each epoch reflecting its values and ideologies, in the 20th century the museum is definitely assumed as influential public equipment propagated all over the world in a prominent position in the city. Through a selective analysis of representative examples of museographic architecture, this study focuses on issues and trends considerably representative of this typological development in the contemporary scene. Based on two major topics, namely the "Icon Museum" and the "Silent Museum, this thesis outlines the analysis of museums of modern and contemporary art, from the Museum of Modern Art of New York (MoMA), Guggenheim Museum of New York, São Paulo Museum of Art, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Niterói Contemporary Art Museum, Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao, and also, Tate Modern in London, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Galician Contemporary Art Centre (CGAC), Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Neue Nationalgalerie of Berlin and the Kunsthaus Bregenz (KUB). Based on the study of these fundamental examples in the History of architecture, the aim is understand the status and trends of contemporary museums today, remaining open its course in the near future dominated by media and new technologies, that inevitably they are involve with.
