Living with epilepsy means to face many challenges related to the physical, social and psychological dimensions of this condition. In an attempt to understand the impact of epilepsy for self and identity problems, we compared the self-esteem of adults with epilepsy (N=80) with a group of asthmatics (N=80) and a group of healthy adults (N=80). The subjects were administered the Self-Perception Profile for Adults, developed by Messer and Harter, 1988, which assesses self-judgments in specific life domains and al so global self-esteem. We also conducted a semi-sctructured interview to examine the impact of epilepsy and of fits on the daily psychological wellbeing of patients as well as specific needs for professional help. The results showed that when compared with the asthmatic and the healthy, epileptics perceived themselves less competent and adequate in intellectual achievements and in social accomplishments, in other words, personal attributes which cross valued social roles in areas like education, work and relationships. Also, interviews revealed that epileptics felt stigmatized and non accepted by the community members, need more specific information about their condition and would like to have professional support to overcome better some of their psychosocial problems.
