Mercado Municipal de Amarante: Diálogo entre Arquitectura e Cultura

Abstract

This dissertation seeks to promote a reflection about the intervention in the built heritage, through a rehabilitation proposal, whose objet of study is the City Market of Amarante and its relationships with the city. In order to achieve the previous purposes, it is required a documentary and bibliographic research about the intervention in the built heritage, about examples of intervention in the public space and about the context the Market belongs to. The understanding and the notion of how to take action in the built heritage is essential to the development of this thesis. Furthermore, it is intended to cover the essence of the trading place and to develop an overview about the historical evolution of the topic "Market". The methodology that provides the basis for the investigation is developed by the cross-checking of specific bibliographic and documentary sources concerning the built heritage intervention issues with a comprehensive fieldwork which will provide the theoretical framework to this project. Therefore, it is proposed to develop a rehabilitation- or regeneration- proposal to Amarante City Market, understanding the influences present in its qualified design of Januário Godinho, so that it may be possible to adapt it to new circumstances by keeping the collective memory and its identity alive. Thus, this dissertation seeks to arouse the public interest in Amarante City Market by calling attention to its current situation.
