Title: Aprendizagem colaborativa no ecossistema U.Porto
Abstract: The pedagogical practice developed within the scope of the
infoCosmetics Portal project is based on the principles of cooperative
and collaborative learning, promoting interaction
between students from different OUs and their active participation
in building knowledge geared towards scientific
dissemination. A multidisciplinary team organises this
project comprises lecturers and students from the Faculty
of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Fine Arts
of the University of Porto, who collaboratively select, produce and edit the content published on the portal. This pedagogical
practice encourages students to develop skills specific to each
scientific area and transversal skills associated with collaborative
learning, such as leadership, conflict management,
and critical thinking. It also reduces isolation and promotes
mutual responsibility, learning new ideas and creating interpersonal
networks. At the same time, this pedagogical practice
makes students more aware of the university's responsibility
to society, the so-called third mission, and the role they
can play in this mission. This way, it contributes to each student
feeling an integral and active part of UP. It encourages
education for citizenship, responding to the need to clarify
consumers' and professionals' doubts about cosmetic products
and ingredients through an educational approach supported
by scientific evidence, using easy-to-understand terminology
and infographics.
Description: A prática pedagógica desenvolvida no âmbito do projeto
cooperativa e colaborativa promovendo a interação
a divulgação científica.
publicados no portal.
Reduz

Diagnosing death by drowning through the analysis of blood markers by inductively coupled plasma: mass spectrometry

Title: Diagnosing death by drowning through the analysis of blood markers by inductively coupled plasma: mass spectrometry
Abstract: Investigation of bodies recovered out of water is a complex but frequent medico-legal task. The key problem is if the victim died due to drowning or by the means of other cause and placed in water. At the moment, the diagnosis of drowning is based on some unspecific findings during autopsy (lung distension and the presence of froth in upper airways and lungs) and the results of laboratory tests. Our project aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the determination by ICP-MS of trace elements (TE) in blood of the cardiac cavities of corpses found in aquatic environment as a tool to increase the certainty of the diagnostic of death by drowning. Blood samples were collected from 18 cadavers found in water, from 2006-2008, in Oporto area. The advantage of ICP-MS compared to other instrumental analytical techniques is clear and it proved to be useful. It allowed us to perform a multielemental analysis of blood, and the results highlight the importance of this kind of approach, compared to previous studies where we are dependent on the results of a single TE.

Evidence of the Impact of Harm Minimization Programs

Title: Evidence of the Impact of Harm Minimization Programs
Abstract: People who use drugs (PWUD) account for around 275 million worldwide, with a prevalence of those who inject drugs (PWID) ranging from 0.180.30%. Drug injecting behaviors are often associated with harmful forms of use, leading users to a higher risk of infectious diseases, overdose, and death caused, among others, by unsafe practices such as shared needles and syringes. Additional burden from drug use includes costs related to crime combating, social consequences of drug behavior, and lost productivity. From a public health perspective, harm minimization measures defined as a range of interventions aiming at addressing the negative effects of drug use on both individuals and society can be implemented for those who are unable or unwilling to stop using drugs. The most common interventions to minimize drug-related harm include access to naloxone, opioid substitution therapy, supply reduction interventions for opioids, integration of testing and treatment of blood-borne diseases, nonprescription sales or provision of sterile syringes, and supervised drug consumption facilities. In this chapter, we provided a brief overview of drug use disorders and synthetized the evidence around the impact of the available interventions to reduce the harm associated, especially, with injectable drug use. Moreover, the contribution of pharmacists to harm minimization interventions was also revised and discussed in the context of pharmacy practice.
