Title: The design of public spaces of exception in the contemporary city: The geography in the construction of public place (The case of the Porto seafront)
Description: IntroductionThe idea of a public space analyzed into explicit types and systems of continuous and well defined open spaces that, until the mid-twentieth century, used to constitute our main reference of public space, does not seem to be recognized in significant parts of the contemporary city.Due to the expansion and fragmentation of cities, especially over the twentieth century, the relevant fact we consider important to note, is the progressive and unstoppable process of disaggregation (both physical and conceptual) between the concepts of city and public space that, until the nineteenth century, were permanently linked (if we consider the public space as the one that condensed organically the political, economical and social space).Taking into account this situation, the general question that this paper will seek to address (from the perspective of the urban design and urban culture) is the extent to which it becomes possible to give an exceptional character to urban public space in a time where urban societies seem to claim more individualized, more specialized and more enlarged forms of public space.

Traditions: between the indigenous and the informal. Endogenia and heterogeneity in the vernacular architecture of São Tomé.

Title: Traditions: between the indigenous and the informal. Endogenia and heterogeneity in the vernacular architecture of São Tomé.
Abstract: "Tradition is not necessarily old-fashioned and is not synonymous with stagnation. Furthermore, a tradition need not date from long ago but may have begun quite recently." Hassan Fathy. Tradition consists in the repetition of a gesture that, due to its symbolic significance, existing resources or proven quality as a solution to a problem, has become relevant and ensures its permanence in time. Evolving from different origins and periods, each new tradition adds on to all its predecessors and contemporaries, resulting in a palimpsest, in the accumulation and depuration of transferred knowledge, into renewed traditions. From the "indigenous" to the endogenous. Within the colonial context, the discussion over the status of the "natives" has come a long way to reach a recognition of dignity, specificity and endogenous knowledge. Although the Portuguese overseas policy might have been more permeable to existing communities in colonized territories than other colonial powers, and though successive restructuring and strategic changes in its ideology might have contributed to a progressive self-determination, the conditions for genuine emancipation were only met with the independence of the new nations. In this context of definition and construction of a collective identity, endogenous knowledge plays an especially important role, being essential to seek the roots and tools for an integrated development within the tangible and intangible heritage. The Santomean vernacular and informal architecture. Within the context of São Tomé, vernacular architecture reflects the different economic and strategic cycles that took place in the territory. In its settlement strategies, in its dispersion or agglomeration, and in the choice of sites or construction solutions, the spontaneity of vernacular architecture reflects the constraints which it has been subject to, as well as the needs it has tried to respond to. The few records of "indigenous" structures suggest some clues for the interpretation of its current configuration. The Santomean territory, as most of the contemporary African continent, inherits the legacy of traditional references, of colonial settlement and technical strategies, as well as recent innovations of Westernization. Nowadays, all these influences overlap: the ephemeral is connected to poverty, and the traditional meets the informal.Resilience and resourcefulness in building solutions. Thus, the constructive solutions adopted in self-construction by rural and urban communities in São Tomé are examples of adaptation, using references from diversified backgrounds. Despite their limited resources, the recurrent solution of elevation from the ground (supporting the dwelling space on wood posts or concrete pillars), or a portability of the buildings (allowing their dismantling and transportation to a different location) may point some traditional strategies of adjustment to local conditions. The potential for development. Accordingly, ongoing research aims at identifying emergent potentialities within the territory of São Tomé, focusing on the investigation subjects of Architecture and Urbanism. By analysing traditional and informal constructions, their relationship with the public and collective space, as well as the construction of the territory, it tries to identify and highlight characteristics that may contribute to an integrated development, both at local and global levels. The individual and collective entrepreneurship (the role of self-help and self-construction as tools of emancipation), the potential of miscegenation (the versatility to assimilate and deal with references from different origins), the adaptability to climate and territory as well as the extensive potential of local materials, are some of the studied features that take part in the ongoing research, which are to be here presented for discussion.
A arquitectura popular e informal São-tomense.

From a Pedagogical Experience of a Photography Course on Architectural and Public Space into a Research Project focused on Communication of Public Space's State and Evolution, Architecture and Urban Cultures

Title: From a Pedagogical Experience of a Photography Course on Architectural and Public Space into a Research Project focused on Communication of Public Space's State and Evolution, Architecture and Urban Cultures
Abstract: This paper will explain how, from a blended teaching experience1 in CFM (Communication,Photography and Multimedia) Course at FAUP (Faculty of Architecture, University of Porto) that lead to several didactic experiences and research projects on architecture and public space (seminars, workshops, publications and editorial projects), CCRE (Centre for Spatial Communication and Representation) Research Group has been able to interrelate a set of significant experiences and results coming from the former work andactivities with the on-going R&D project DARC, more specifically with its City Spaces|Culture module, directed towards the communication of content related to cultural events and spaces as architectural heritage, identity and historical places. All these projects, together with CCRE's communication philosophy, its online platforms and physical outputs - such as publications and exhibitions - constitute a blend between direct and "indirect" pedagogy strategies on architecture, public space and the way they are experienced by the general public. As we will explain in this paper, all these research projects were fundamental to assess the possibilities and limits of our pedagogic/didactic philosophy, as well as to trigger new and more effective ways of communicating and sharing substantial information between students and the general public. This paper will therefore explore the blended approach that we've taken in CFM classes, how it translated into the various platforms that we've used for it and for other parallel activities, and how this knowledge is being applied to the on-going DARC research project and to its set of communication and presentation operators. The goal will be to verify how the combined operators that we've used in our platform(ranging from geo-referenced maps, images and videos - focused on visual literacy - and social networking - focused on communication) allowed for a deeper involvement and participation of both academic community and general public.

Espaços de heranças, apropriações e patrimónios partilhados. São Tomé e Príncipe: pós-colonialismo e desenvolvimento.

Title: Espaços de heranças, apropriações e patrimónios partilhados.
