Abstract: Art and culture play a fundamental role in several aspects
of human life, including health, as evidenced by the World
Health Organization's report (Fancourt &amp; Saoirse, 2019).
Cultural prescription, which advocates that health professionals
can prescribe cultural and artistic experiences to promote
well-being, has been adopted and studied in international
contexts, due to the growing recognition of its positive impact
on different spheres of human life (Jensen et al, 2024). Given
the absence of this dimension in the curricular units (UC)
of University of Porto courses, the creation of this UC addresses this need, focusing on the development of transversal
skills in the area.
The multidisciplinary nature of the syllabus, the contact
with teachers from different areas in different venues
and the translation of theory into lived experiences provide
an enriching training opportunity for students, redefining
and expanding the learning spaces into the cultural sphere,
and fostering a networked collaboration between the university,
cultural institutions, and civil society, with significant
formative and relational potential. Thus, this experience provides,
on the one hand, the interdisciplinary appropriation
of scientific knowledge on the relationship between art and
health and the relevance of cultural prescription for the individual
and for society and, on the other, personal and attitudinal
development, nourished by content and methods based
on humanistic, relational and collaborative perspectives, experienced
in workshops and in the development of cultural prescription
projects.
The transdisciplinary nature of the course has also fostered
scientific, disciplinary and pedagogical synergies between lecturers,
through the joint preparation and orientation of sessions,
in an innovative partnership between higher education
lecturers, scientists and artists.
Description: A arte e a cultura desempenham um papel fundamental
em diversos aspetos da vida humana, nomeadamente
na saúde, como evidencia o relatório da Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) (Fancourt &amp; Saoirse, 2019). A prescrição
cultural, que preconiza que profissionais de saúde
possam prescrever experiências culturais e artísticas para
promoção do bem-estar, tem vindo a ser adotada e estudada
no contexto internacional, justamente pelo reconhecimento
crescente do seu impacto positivo em diferentes esferas
da vida humana (Jensen et. al., 2024). Dada a ausência
desta dimensão nas unidades curriculares (UC) dos cursos
da Universidade do Porto, a criação desta UC vem colmatar
este hiato, orientando-se para o desenvolvimento de competências
transversais a partir deste domínio.
O cariz multidisciplinar do plano de estudos, o contacto
com docentes de diferentes áreas em lugares diversificados e a
vivência prática da teoria configuram uma oportunidade formativa
enriquecedora para os estudantes, redefinindo e estendendo
os lugares de aprendizagem à esfera da cultura, promovendo
um trabalho em rede entre universidade, espaços
culturais e sociedade civil, com potencial formativo e relacional
significativo. Neste sentido, esta experiência proporciona,
por um lado, a apropriação interdisciplinar de conhecimento
científico sobre a relação entre arte e saúde e sobre a relevância da prescrição cultural para a pessoa e para a sociedade e,
por outro, o desenvolvimento pessoal e atitudinal, alimentado
por conteúdos e métodos alicerçados numa perspetiva humanista,
relacional e colaborativa, ensaiada em workshops e na
elaboração de projetos de prescrição cultural.
A transdisciplinaridade da UC tem sido também promotora
de sinergias científicas, disciplinares e pedagógicas entre
os docentes, através da preparação e dinamização conjunta
das sessões por elementos de diferentes unidades orgânicas
e/ou de diferentes campos de atuação profissional, numa
parceria inovadora entre docentes do ensino superior, cientistas
e artistas.</description>

Abstract: Although the space where people experience their lives
influences their health, the professionals directly and indirectly
involved in designing health promotion programmes
and policies, and those who design these spaces, often ignore
these relationships by working in isolation. In order to promote
interdisciplinary dialogue and cooperation, we designed
the Health, Well-being and Architecture curricular unit.
The learning objectives of this course were to identify
the main environmental and social determinants of health
and to develop solutions for health-promoting spaces,
integrating the basic concepts of public health and architecture.
To this end, it combined theoretical and practical sessions,
taught by lecturers from the fields of medicine, architecture,
landscape design and geography, with field visits to green
spaces and buildings and housing developments of different
scales, identifying health needs and the relationship with
the environment and opportunities for promoting a healthier
environment. It also organised two seminars with international
speakers and a public presentation of the work at the partner
organisation (Domus Social).
There were 101 applications for the three editions. The 61
participants successfully completed the course, getting actively
involved in all the activities and showing a high degree
of autonomy and commitment in the group exercises. More
specifically, organised into multidisciplinary groups, they drew up diagnoses of the health situation of inhabitants in buildings
managed by Domus Social, identifying proximal and distal
determinants, and designed proposals for intervention at the
levels of urban, collective and private space in the complexes
under study.
This interdisciplinary experience was positively received
by the students, who recognised it as highly relevant to their
professional training and personal development, and the
exercises, developed in project-based learning, which were
frankly positive, allowed them to think about health
and architecture from a broad and articulated perspective
Description: Ainda que o espaço onde as pessoas experienciam a sua vida
influencie a sua saúde, os profissionais direta e indiretamente
envolvidos no desenho de programas e políticas de promoção
da saúde, e os que desenham estes espaços, frequentemente
ignoram estas relações, trabalhando isoladamente. De forma
a promover o diálogo e a cooperação interdisciplinar, desenhámos
a unidade curricular de Saúde, Bem-estar e Arquitetura.
Este curso teve como objetivos de aprendizagem a identificação
dos principais determinantes ambientais e sociais da saúde e o desenvolvimento de soluções para espaços promotores
de saúde, integrando os conceitos básicos de saúde
pública e arquitetura. Para tal, combinou sessões teórico-práticas,
lecionadas por docentes das áreas da medicina, arquitetura,
paisagismo e geografia, com visitas de campo a espaços
verdes e a edifícios e conjuntos habitacionais, de diferentes
escalas, identificando necessidades de saúde e relação com o
meio e oportunidades para a promoção de um ambiente mais
saudável. Promoveu ainda dois seminários com palestrantes
internacionais e uma apresentação pública dos trabalhos
na entidade parceira (Domus Social).
As três edições realizadas contaram com 101 candidaturas.
Os 61 participantes completaram com aproveitamento a unidade
curricular, envolvendo-se ativamente em todas as atividades
e revelando um elevado grau de autonomia e empenho
nos exercícios em grupo. Mais especificamente, organizados
em grupos multidisciplinares, elaboraram diagnósticos
da situação de saúde de habitantes em edifícios geridos pela
Domus Social, identificando determinantes proximais e distais,
e desenharam propostas para intervir aos níveis do espaço
urbano, coletivo e privado dos conjuntos em estudo.
Esta experiência interdisciplinar foi positivamente recebida
pelos estudantes, reconhecendo-lhe elevada relevância
para a sua formação profissional e desenvolvimento pessoal,
e os exercícios, desenvolvidos em project-based learning, francamente
positivos, permitiram o pensamento da saúde e da arquitetura
numa perspetiva ampla e articulada.</description>

Abstract: Background: Firefighting is a strenuous occupation that requires firefighters to be in excellent physical condition. However, some of these professionals are not sufficiently physically fit for duty, negatively impacting their performance. Objective: To cardiopulmonary characterize Portuguese firefighters at different exercise intensities to clarify if their physical fitness profile is adequate to overcome their occupational activities demands. Methodology: Twenty-four healthy Portuguese firefighters performed an intermittent running protocol (with 1 km·h1 increments and 30 s intervals) on a treadmill. Cardiorespiratory variables and core temperature were measured continuously during the exercise, while blood lactate and rating of perceived exertion were assessed during the rest periods between steps. Results: The increase in velocity along the running protocol resulted in higher values of oxygen uptake (41.5 ± 8.5 mL/min/kg), blood lactate (13.5 ± 4.6 mmol/L) and rating of perceived exertion (19 ± 1). However, there was stabilization of the respiratory quotient and heart rate from heavy to severe intensities. Discussion/Conclusions: Portuguese firefighters have a minimum level of cardiopulmonary fitness to perform their professional duties. However, given the high demands on the cardiopulmonary function of firefighting, it is essential that firefighters participate in regular training programs to maintain and develop cardiopulmonary physical fitness.       <title>Modelling Physical Fatigue Through Physiological Monitoring Within High-Risk Professions</title>

Abstract: Physical fatigue is not only a tiredness condition but can also be a symptom of various diseases or a precursor of workplace accidents and incidents. High-risk professions like firefighters and military personnel are more frequently exposed to it and its consequences. To contribute to current research efforts towards physical fatigue quantification approaches for these professionals, the current work aimed to test a previously developed machine learning algorithm based on physiological monitoring on a dataset of soldiers engaged in an incremental running protocol. Personal characteristics and signals from heart rate, breathing rate and core temperature were recorded from participants and used to extract 20 features. These were used as inputs to an XGBoosted algorithm to classify four levels of physical fatigue: low, moderate, heavy and severe. Outcomes showed an overall accuracy of 85% and accuracies of 100 and 92% for detecting the low and heavy levels. Also, the importance of individualised monitoring and the need for more than one physiological indicator to accurately characterise the subject physical fatigue status were demonstrated. Overall, the results confirm the model's contribution to current fatigue detection methods. Future studies will be oriented to test its validity within a bigger sample while assessing more occupational activities. Abstract: Investigation of bodies recovered out of water is a complex but frequent medico-legal task. The key problem is if the victim died due to drowning or by the means of other cause and placed in water. At the moment, the diagnosis of drowning is based on some unspecific findings during autopsy (lung distension and the presence of froth in upper airways and lungs) and the results of laboratory tests. Our project aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the determination by ICP-MS of trace elements (TE) in blood of the cardiac cavities of corpses found in aquatic environment as a tool to increase the certainty of the diagnostic of death by drowning. Blood samples were collected from 18 cadavers found in water, from 2006-2008, in Oporto area. The advantage of ICP-MS compared to other instrumental analytical techniques is clear and it proved to be useful. It allowed us to perform a multielemental analysis of blood, and the results highlight the importance of this kind of approach, compared to previous studies where we are dependent on the results of a single TE.</description>

Abstract: Fatigue decreases performance and physical strength causing incidents and accidents in operational settings. During military operations, soldiers encounter extreme conditions, which combined lead to a fatigue status that can cause serious physiological impairments, decreasing performance on the battlefield. Comprehensive studies in realistically stressful environments are essential to expand the knowledge regarding the consequences of real-life stress exposure and facilitate the development of operationally-useful techniques. This review, as part of a project for the development of a safety system based on physiological monitoring, aims to obtain relevant information about fatigue assessment through multiple physiological parameters in the military context, to focus on determining the associations between fatigue and physiological response in order to plan adequate interventions to prevent related negative consequences. Five databases (Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, Medline and Web of Science) are used to develop a data search based on the crosswords of keywords. A total of 12 publications are included in the review. Topics such as sample characteristics, assessment context, purposes and findings of each study, parameters and equipment used, are analyzed. Abstract: The concerns about privacy and personal data protection resulted in reforms of the existing legislation in European Union (EU). The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) aims to reform the existing measures on the topic of personal data protection of the European Union citizens, with a strong input on the rights and freedoms of people and in the establishment of rules for the processing of personal data. OpenEHR is a standard that embodies many principles of interoperable and secure software for electronic health records. This work aims to understand to what extent the openEHR standard can be considered a solution for the requirements needed by GDPR. A list of requirements for a Hospital Information Systems (HIS) compliant with GDPR and an identification of openEHR specifications was made. The requirements were categorized and compared with the specifications. The requirements identified for the systems were matched with the openEHR specifications, which result in 16 requirements matched with openEHR. All the specifications identified matched at least one requirement. OpenEHR is a solution for the development of HIS that reinforce privacy and personal data protection, ensuring that they are contemplated in the system development. The institutions can secure that their Eletronic Health Record are compliant with GDPR while safeguarding the medical data quality and, as a result, the healthcare delivery.</description>

Abstract: In the last decade, several HRV based novel methodologies for describing and assessing heart rate dynamics have been proposed in the literature with the aim of risk assessment. Such methodologies attempt to describe the non-linear and complex characteristics of HRV, and hereby the focus is in two of these characteristics, namely long memory and heteroscedasticity with variance clustering. The ARFIMA-GARCH modeling considered here allows the quantification of long range correlations and time-varying volatility. ARFIMA-GARCH HRV analysis is integrated with multimodal brain monitoring in several acute cerebral phenomena such as intracranial hypertension, decompressive craniectomy and brain death. The results indicate that ARFIMA-GARCH modeling appears to reflect changes in Heart Rate Variability (HRV) dynamics related both with the Acute Brain Injury (ABI) and the medical treatments effects. Abstract: The study presented here addresses segmentation methodologies applied to Doppler ultrasound images of the carotid bifurcation acquired as a sequence of 2D ultrasound transverse images. Initial identification of image elements representing transversal cuts of the artery followed by parameter analysis enables a fast methodology for lumen and artery wall identification and segmentation for the complete image sequence. Different arterial geometries, along with the presence of plaque, artefacts and speckle noise, can modify the expected circular shapes of the arteries making identification extremely difficult. Initial identified parameters are crucial for the analysis of image behavior across the bifurcation suggesting methodologies for image correction and irregularity detection on the artery representation. Statistical analysis of the accuracy of the bifurcation modelling from transverse image segmentation validates the methodology results as compared to results from medical manual segmentation and results from segmentation of longitudinal Doppler ultrasound images. Abstract: Paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridilium dichloride; PQ) is an effective and widely used herbicide in Asiatic and American countries with a claimed safety record when appropriately applied to eliminate weeds. However, over the last decades a growing body of epidemiologic evidence has been linking longterm/low-dose PQ exposure to the development of Parkinsons disease (PD). PQ is well known for its ability to induce oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, -synuclein fibrillation and neuronal cell loss.
