Abstract: a comparative analysis of the characteristics of the urban cartographic documents used (about two dozen surveys/projects, dating from the late 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century) and emphasizes the use of ancient urban cartography as an important tool for knowledge and recognition of urban morphogenesis, such as a framework of current urban action. The Boavista axis corresponds to a notable straight segment (consisting of a street, an avenue, a rectangular square and two roundabouts) that extends for about 6.5 kilometers, evidencing an intermediate roundabout and presenting two typologically different cross profiles. Being one of the elements that are most evident in the urban network of Porto and which looks like the result of a single planning feature, the Boavista axis is also notable because it was built between the 18th and 20th centuries, corresponding to the political persistence of several generations of municipal power. Contrary to its form, its history is not linear and although considering the course of Rua da Boavista as the genesis conditioning the layout of the Avenida da Boavista, each (street and avenue) evokes distinct urban designs, based on different territorial and urban strategies. The formation of the Boavista axis between 1784 and 1915/17 was more complex, but urban cartography allows identifying each of its structuring periods, either by identifying the physical elements that identify the phasing process, or by the intrinsic characteristics of the various documents cartographic.

In situ cyclic tests on existing stone masonry walls and strengthening solutions

Title: In situ cyclic tests on existing stone masonry walls and strengthening solutions
Abstract: The present work reports on an in situ experimental test campaign carried out on abandoned traditional masonry houses after the 9th July 1998 earthquake that seriously hit the Faial island of Azores. For the testing purposes, an experimental test setup was developed based on a self-equilibrated scheme, which is herein described reporting on the advantages and drawbacks of this in situ test setup. Five specimens were tested aiming at characterizing the out-of-plane behavior of stone masonry walls and strengthening solutions recommended for post-earthquake interventions. A detailed comparison between solutions' efficiency is presented including a cost vs benefit analysis. In order to assess the efficiency of the developed test setup for other applications on stone masonry walls, an in-plane test on an existing URM panel is also presented. Several related issues are discussed, namely the advantages of dealing with the real boundary conditions and the capacity of providing valuable information of the response, as well as a detailed analysis of the obtained results. The authors believe that this work provides an increase in knowledge on the seismic behavior of the existing masonry constructions, resulting from the development of an in situ test setup and the efficiency quantification of strengthening solutions. Therefore, the work is thought to positively contribute for the preservation of architectural heritage and for its seismic vulnerability reduction.
Title: Grid-based design in Roman villas: a method of analysis
Abstract: The perceivable regularity of some Roman villas can be understood in the context of a grid-based design. In this paper we try to clarify the requirements under which we may consider that a villa has an outline based on a grid and we quantify the accuracy of the correspondence between a villa's plan and a given grid. We follow this approach with some Roman villas in Portugal and use the grids as a tool for the analysis and the reconstruction of their plans.

Title: Out-of-plane behaviour of existing stone masonry buildings: experimental evaluation
Abstract: Masonry structures can be considered as the simplest type of structures concerning its assemblage but, at the same time, it is one of the most complex construction materials in terms of mechanical properties and correct behaviour assessment. In this context, the work herein presented aims at describing an experimental testing campaign recently carried out in order to characterize the out-of-plane behaviour of traditional masonry constructions. Taking advantage of the existence of a traditional two-storey masonry building abandoned after the 1998 Azores earthquake, several in-situ tests were defined and performed with the application of quasi-static cyclic loads at the building top level in the out-of-plane direction. In addition, the efficiency of retrofitting and/or strengthening techniques applied during the 1998 Azores reconstruction process was also experimentally evaluated. Finally, an overall discussion of these techniques is presented, resorting also to previous tests' results carried out by the same authors, aiming at inferring and suggesting quantifications of strengthening techniques' contributions for future interventions on existing buildings. For this purpose, simple analytical mechanical approaches were adopted in order to provide numerical estimates of strength that were found in good agreement with the experimental results. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Abstract: The old residential buildings with a "current architecture" are recognized as cultural heritage, but they are not an work of art, or a monuments, and not just an urban setting. They have characteristics that restrict their appreciation and influencing the actions of intervention. Here, we wish to characterize this type of building, arguing for the need to consider their specificities in context of the rehabilitation, including the normative guiding their protection.

Title: Beira: uma paisagem modernista na África Tropical = Beira: a modernist landscape in Tropical Africa
Abstract: Beira is a complex and unique case study regarding the implementation of modernist ideas in tropicalcountries. The city became prosperous due to the high yields provided by its rail and port interface connectingto Rhodesia/Zimbabwe; it attracted wealth, ambitious, talented young Portuguese architects and civilengineers that built a paradoxical metropolis, filled with iconic modernist buildings, complex and unorthodoxtechnical solutions that filled an unique urban plan in the Portuguese colonial Africa. This article discusses thecity expansion process based on a modernist matrix, deeply influenced by Brazilian architectural and urbanimaginary, emphasizing the application of modernist influence in the citys expansion logic as well as technical and political options. It also discusses the importance of the exchange of ideas; and urban and architecturalmodels among Portuguese architects and civil engineers based in Mozambique. The authors methodologicallyconducted an established recognition fieldwork of the citys matrix and identified the modernist architecturallegacy of Brazilian influence by selecting the most emblematic examples among the buildings.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to verify how Leonardo's invention of a new representational technique for centrally planned temples - combining as a system, the building plan and a bird's eye perspective - is related to his own architectonic research on centralized space. In general it is proved the mutual dependence of this kind of representation and form result, but for some cases, it is also detected some limitations of the system, as is the case of the squared plan temple presented in MS 2037, fol. 3v, to which is proposed, according to Leonardo's clues and a few contemporary architectonic examples, some hypothesis for the whole shape of the building.

Abstract: This essay focuses on the way of using radial geometry as anarchitectural practice tool placed at the service of an anonymous andplain housing architecture. Particularly, the study is about the remarkableoctagon figure aptitude to support domestic programs, in opposition to itshistorical significance as sacred geometry to structure religiousarchitecture, namely those dedicated to the Virgin Mary and The Saviour. In a certain moment of an investigation about early modernPortuguese housing architecture, I found a peculiar article published in1933 on the Portuguese architectural review A Arquitectura Modernaabout the "Tomorrow House" drew by the architect George FrederickKeck (1895-1980) and exposed on the Chicago fair A Century ofProgress International Exposition. This fact carried the research to OrsonSquire Fowler (1809-87), an American author who wrote in the middle ofthe nineteenth century a fantastic book about octagonal houses. Hisapparent ordinary story is really a kind of lost link that allows go back acentury some Modern housing concerns.
