Translator ethics

Title: Translator ethics
Abstract: This chapter examines the ethical issues in the translation industry from a bottom-up, agent-focused perspective. As a starting point, I trace the evolution of ethical thinking in Translation Studies, before moving to the key agent at the core of our explorations: the individual translator. I then consider a translator's responsibilities and how these have been codified. As I examine, in a professional context translator ethics has been conceived of almost uniquely via translator codes, encompassing concepts such as accuracy, confidentiality, and impartiality. I cover the history and formalisation of these codes before considering potential critiques. I then briefly explore some key emerging ethical concerns such as representativeness and representation, social responsibility, wellbeing and self-care, the implications of technology and ethics, and sustainability and ecological issues. This chapter ends by looking towards the future of ethics from the perspective of the translator.

Spotlighting distraction in artificial intelligence driver assistance systems

Title: Spotlighting distraction in artificial intelligence driver assistance systems
Abstract: As artificial intelligence driver monitoring systems gain momentum in intelligent mobility, it is critical to analyse how distraction is defined and induced. This systematic review was specifically focused on studies conducted in driving simulators. A Boolean query was iteratively developed to retrieve articles from Scopus that fulfil the following criteria: (1) being an empirical study, (2) addressing driver distraction, (3) using a driving simulator, (4) aiming at developing an artificial intelligence monitoring system. After screening, 34 articles remained and were analysed according to four general themes: definition of distraction, characteristics of the scenarios used in the driving simulator, sampling of participants, and procedures. Results showed that the most common definitions of distraction consider it as a shift in the driver's attention towards a secondary task, which implicates in a degradation of the execution of the primary task (i.e., driving the vehicle), and, consequently, a reduction in driving safety. Most articles described the scenarios used in the simulator in greater detail and, in some cases, variations in traffic density, visibility, and environmental conditions were observed. Furthermore, scripted critical events in the scenario (e.g., car in front of the participant breaking) were also used. Recruitment and samples varied greatly between studies, with the smallest population consisting of two and the largest of 97 participants. Despite the sample size, participants still needed to meet eligibility criteria such as having a driver's license, possessing minimum driving experience, health prerequisites, being part of a specific group, age, and gender. Procedures and tasks were not always described in detail. However, several studies described an initial moment where participants could familiarize themselves with the simulator without taking measurements, while fewer reported that participants were allowed to familiarize themselves with the tasks. Session length varied from eight to 90 minutes. Regarding the operationalization of distraction in experiments, some studies required drivers to perform a single type of distraction-inducing task (mental calculations, use of In-Vehicle Information System (IVIS), cell phone operation, and manual tasks) with varying difficulty levels. Still, most studies relied on a combination of different tasks, such as cell phone use, physical tasks (e.g., drinking, moving objects, and applying makeup), and IVIS use. Results showed studies favour the description of the digital systems over the experiment design and procedures and a preference for locating the studies at the individual level of analysis, precluding a broader understanding of human behaviour as socially constructed and signified. We argue that articulation with higher levels of analysis would bring relevant explanations for actual road behaviour and personal and social factors should be considered when developing driver monitoring systems aimed at reducing distraction. Our results may assist future studies within the same scope, guiding the definition of effective experimental designs to test artificial intelligence driving monitoring systems, while contributing to a more holistic understanding of driver's behaviour.
Traduction humaine et traduction automatique de Grândola, Vila Morena en français

Title: Traduction humaine et traduction automatique de Grândola, Vila Morena en français
Abstract: José Afonso's poetic song, Grândola, Vila Morena, became 'the anthem of the
Portuguese protest movement' (Ciccia 2013) and 'the anthem of the Carnation Revolution'
(Gomez 2017). This revolutionary song has inspired numerous spontaneous translations
into French. A sample of translations available online enabled us to compile a corpus of
five human translations that highlight diverse interpretations of the original text and
choices of convergent or divergent translation strategies. To these five versions, we added
five versions produced by neural machine translation engines: one from Google Translate
(January 2026) and two from DeepL, 'the world's best translator' according to its creators, and
from eTranslation, the engine of the European Union's Directorate-General for Translation,
generated in November 2024 and January 2026. This study aims to compare these ten
versions in terms of denotative and formal-aesthetic equivalence (Koller, 1992) to identify
the translation strategies employed by the human translator or the machine to address the
challenges of this poetic text. The results show that denotative equivalence is prioritised in
human and machine-generated literal, verse-by-verse translations, with one exception. They
also reveal that translation solutions are numerous and that semantic equivalence errors do
not result solely from the machine's lack of common sense.
Description: FR: La chanson poétique de José Afonso Grândola, Vila Morena est devenue « l'hymne

Title: Chronique d'une révolution confisquée. J'ai voulu tuer Mário Soares de Régis Sénécal (2023)
Abstract: This article aims to offer a critical analysis of Régis Sénécal's novel J'ai voulu tuer
Mário Soares, a work that could legitimately be classified within the literary subgenre of
'political fiction', as it explores, through the medium of fable, the themes of power, politics,
ideologies and conflict, whilst verging on the political thriller. Indeed, it features the usual
thematic elements: political manipulation, ideological conflicts, the revolutionary question
and its utopian or dystopian exploitation, all set against the immediate aftermath of the
Carnation Revolution.
Description: FR: Cet article entend proposer une lecture critique du roman J'ai voulu tuer Mário
