The Wikibase Ecosystem in DH and GLAM

Title: The Wikibase Ecosystem in DH and GLAM
Abstract: DARIAH-EU Working Group DHwiki presents this White Paper about
Wikibase and the Wikibase Ecosystem as a digest of its permanent activ-
ity in providing documentation about MediaWiki-based software solutions
to researchers. The output of the Working group is accessible on its Wik-
ibase instance at https://dhwiki.wikibase.cloud. As diverse as the Work-
ing Group itself is the target group of this report: DH researchers, GLAM
institutions, contributors to the software platforms provided by Wikime-
dia, and software developers. When starting to engage with Wikidata and
Wikibase, we have seen ourselves sometimes lost in a diverse landscape
of disperse documentation resources with different scope and aimed at
differently skilled readers. With this contribution, we hope to provide a
comfortable pathway towards adopting Wikibase in FAIR Linked Data
publishing and collaborative data curation workflows.

Title: Multilingual characterization and extraction of narratives from online news: annotation guidelines
Abstract: This document provides the detailed annotation guidelines and annotation campaign design used
for the creation of the datasets for the SemEval 2025 Task 10 on Multilingual Characterization and
Extraction of Narratives from Online News. During this campaign, a total of 2419 documents were
annotated by 35 individuals in 5 languages, covering over 96 fine-grained and 22 coarse-grained
labels spanning 3 taxonomies. The annotation task is subdivided into three subtasks: Entity
Framing, Narrative Classification, and Explanation of Narrative Classification. This document
provides a detailed description of each task and the related taxonomies used, i.e., Named Entity
Role taxonomy, and Fine-grained Narrative taxonomies covering two domains: Climate Change
and Ukraine-Russia war. We also provide the annotation guidelines for all three tasks and the
description of the overall annotation procedure management. The taxonomies are accompanied
by examples for each label in all the 5 languages of the shared task. Additionally, full-fledged
annotated examples for all tasks are provided. Furthermore, we describe Inception, the annotation
platform used for the annotation process, and provide step-by-step instructions for the annotators
on how to use it. Finally, based on the lessons learned we provide suggestions on how to run
similar-in-nature large multilingual annotation campaigns.

O percurso apresentado cobrirá, passo a passo:
(i) criação da galeria-índice e definição de metadados;
(ii) utilização de OCR e do fluxo de revisão colaborativa (ProofreadPage);
(iii) normas de transcrição e formatação: predefinições usuais, notas, gestão de translineação e colunas, numeração;
(iv) transclusão para o espaço principal e retoques finais (categorias, navegação);

Title: Why do the agri-food systems need inclusive policies on innovation for sustainability? The role of rural actors
Abstract: Traditionally, rural regions have been marginalized in discussions of innovation and development, with urban areas taking precedence. However, amidst growing concerns over sustainability, there's a pressing need to debate this narrative, particularly in the context of agri-food systems. This short communication highlights the indispensable role of rural actors, particularly family farmers, in driving sustainable development. Firstly, the agri-food sector's substantial ecological footprint underscores its significance in sustainability efforts. Family farmers, who form the backbone of this sector, contribute significantly to food security and environmental stewardship. Despite facing rural poverty, they offer innovative solutions to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss. Inclusive innovation policies must prioritize family farmers' participation, aligning with sustainability and poverty alleviation principles. Such policies should encourage collaboration between diverse stakeholders and leverage traditional knowledge alongside modern technology. Moreover, strategies should combat the dominance of large corporations, promoting the inclusion of small farmers in innovation processes. Embracing models like agroecology and the circular economy, alongside cross-sectoral policies, offers pathways to sustainable development. By recognizing and empowering rural actors, we can foster innovation, food security, and autonomy, ultimately advancing towards a more equitable and sustainable future.
