Abstract: Resumo da tese: A adesão ao Padrão Alimentar Mediterrânico (PAM) está associada a taxas de morbilidade e mortalidade mais baixas. A nível nutricional este padrão alimentar caracteriza-se por um consumo abundante de ácidos gordos monoinsaturados, sobretudo de ácido oleico, de fibras e de substâncias de origem vegetal com elevado potencial antioxidante. Portugal apresenta características que lhe têm conferido um estatuto mediterrânico. No entanto, a alimentação dos portugueses, há semelhança do que se tem verificado noutros países mediterrânicos, tem vindo gradualmente a afastar-se da dieta tradicional tipo mediterrânica. Embora os dados disponíveis sobre a adesão ao PAM em crianças e adolescentes em Portugal, ainda sejam limitados, estudos desenvolvidos em Espanha e na Grécia, evidenciam que as crianças e os adolescentes estão a afastar-se das suas raízes mediterrânicas. A informação disponível em Portugal baseia-se sobretudo em dados recolhidos a partir dos orçamentos familiares e das balanças alimentares, o que não permite categorizar dados relativos a crianças e adolescentes. Portugal fica localizado no extremo ocidental da Europa e a região do Algarve fica localizado no sul de Portugal continental. Pela sua posição geográfica apresenta um clima temperado, com mais de 3000 horas de sol por ano e baixa pluviosidade anual. Apresenta características morfológicas e geológicas próprias que permitem dividi-lo em três regiões principais: Litoral, Barrocal e Serra. O litoral corresponde à estreita faixa junto da costa, conhecido pelas Rias Formosa e do Alvor e pelas suas praias.(...)/Thesis abstract: The adherence to the Mediterranean Eating Pattern is associated to low rates of mortality and morbidity. This pattern is characterized by the abundant consumption of monounsaturated fatty acids, mainly by the oleic acid, fibres and of vegetal substances with high antioxidant potential. Portugal presents food habits and characteristics that can be classified as Mediterranean. However, the Portuguese like the majority of European mediterranean population, have gradually moved away from its traditional mediterranean eating pattern. In spite the fact that the available data related to the food habits of youngsters is scarce, studies developed in Spain and Greece, demonstrate that food habits of children and teenagers are further apart from of their Mediterranean roots. The available information in Portugal related to the adherence of Mediterranean Eating Pattern is based, mainly, in data collected from the household´s budgets surveys and food balance sheets; however this methodology does not allow to obtain information directly related with food habits of youngsters. Porugal is located in the west coast of Europe and the region of Algarve is in the south region of Portugal. Due to its geographical location, it has a temperate climate, with more than 3.000 hours of sun per year and a low annually rain rate. We can divide the Algarve into three separate regions due to its own specific geographical and morphologic characteristics: Litoral, Barrocal and Serra.
