Abstract: This chapter describes the relationships between oxidative stress and the metabolic syndrome. Evidence suggests that oxidative stress may be involved in the aetiology, pathogenesis, and development of the metabolic syndrome. Additionally an important question remains to be asked: should we focus on antioxidant supplementation for managing the progression of complications, or on earlier steps before the development of complications? We think that it is crucial to interfere in both steps to prevent and treat several diseases, including the metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, antioxidant therapy may not only be too late, but it may also miss a large fraction of the target, as nonoxidative pathways do also contribute to cell damage. © 2009 Springer Netherlands.</description>

Abstract: In the last two decades, major advances have been made on TRPV1 expression and function in the urinary bladder. Much of this was accomplished after the cloning of the TRPV1 receptor. The development of antibodies against TRPV1 allowed the study of the receptor distribution. Moreover, the raise of transgenic mice lacking TRPV1 gene and the discovery and development of molecules that modulate the receptor brought new insights on TRPV1's important role in the occurrence of urinary bladder pathologies. More recently, effective TRPV1 antagonists were developed and tested with success in intact bladders and in several models of bladder disease, further disclosing the role of TRPV1 in micturition dysfunction. The easy access to TRPV1 receptors in the human urinary bladder to desensitizing vanilloids agents, like capsaicin and resiniferatoxin, represents one of the first successful therapeutic approaches based in TRPV1 receptor modulation.

Apresentam-se os resultados da adaptação e validação da tradução portuguesa do Children Eating Behaviour Questionnaire.A validação implicou a investigação factorial do questionário, a investigação da sensibilidade e da consistência interna de cada sub-escala do CEBQ.</description>

Abstract: Contemporaneous dietary patterns could be best described as in need of improvement. Obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome prevalence increased dramatically in the recent years likely due to unbalanced dietary patterns and sedentary lifestyle. Epidemiological studies have shown that dietary patterns are significantly associated with the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer,diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Fruits and vegetables have improved the human diet for centuries, enriching it nutritionally and sensorially. A significant amount of vitamins and minerals in the diet come from fruits and vegetables. Approximately half of the vitamin A, in the form of carotene, over 90% of vitamin C and 40% of folacin come from this food group. Fruits contribute with considerable amounts of vitamins A, C, B6, thiamin, niacin and minerals (i.e. magnesium and iron) to our diet. Furthermore, they supply proteins,starch and sugars, and they are important sources of dietary and crude fiber. Epidemiological and clinical investigations demonstrate significant decrease in morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and other diseases among fruit and vegetables consumers. These benefits have been associated to their content on dietary fiber and different bioactive compounds with anti-atherosclerotic and anticancer effects.</description>

Description: A formação em Ciências da Nutrição na Universidade do Porto apresentou desde sempre uma componente relacionada com a comunicação, quer de forma direta ou indireta, evidenciando a importância atribuída à necessidade de capacitar os futuros profissionais de saúde para a intervenção no espaço público. No entanto, a integração das ciências da comunicação na formação dos Nutricionistas tem sido alvo de um percurso irregular, característico de duas ciências em franca evolução, refletindo ainda as enormes transformações sociais e tecnológicas nas sociedades contemporâneas e os desafios que se colocam à atuação do Nutricionista.No sentido de uniformizar as competências nesta área foi criada em 2007/2008 a Unidade Curricular (UC) de Comunicação na FCNAUP, a única instituição pública a formar Nutricionistas em Portugal, sendo lecionada no 2o semestre do 1o ano. A UC tem como objetivos capacitar os futuros profissionais para a produção e divulgação científica na área das7660￼￼￼￼￼￼ciências da nutrição, desde a seleção e recolha de informação de qualidade às competências para a difusão de informação científica aos pares e para os diferentes públicos, utilizando metodologias e linguagem adequada.No ano letivo de 2010/2011, foi criada uma atividade pedagógica na UC no âmbito de um programa de rádio intitulado "Ondas   Nutricionais", que teve como objectivo capacitar os alunos para a divulgação de informação e comunicação para o público em geral utilizando a rádio como meio de comunicação. Esta atividade prática consistiu na elaboração de um guião de orientação para a gravação de uma emissão via rádio, tendo como ponto de partida a transformação de um artigo científico previamente elaborado pelos estudantes e assente num tema atribuído pelos docentes. A elaboração deste texto para difusão pública utilizando como suporte a Rádio desenvolveu-se como atividade de grupo, com 3 a 4 elementos, ao longo de 3 sessões teórico-práticas, de modo a proporcionar a discussão entre pares e a aquisição de competências em trabalho de equipa. Como objetivos específicos, pretendia-se que os alunos adquirissem competências ao nível da adaptação dos conteúdos e da linguagem técnico- científica de acordo com o formato da comunicação para a rádio e também de acordo os interesses do público alvo, de forma a que a informação transmitida fosse clara, perceptível e eficiente. A gravação do programa da rádio ocorreu em contexto real, no âmbito de um programa existente na Engenharia Rádio da   Universidade   do   Porto,   intitulado   "Ondas   Nutricionais",  o  qual  foi  desenvolvido  inicialmente  com  o  propósito  de  funcionar  como  apoio  às   atividades pedagógicas no âmbito da UC de Comunicação.Espera-se que este modelo inovador de atividade pedagógica contribua para a formação do Nutricionista, ao qual se exige, cada vez mais, que seja capaz de ir além de um mero difusor de informação e seja capaz de ser gerador de mudança, de transformação, incentivando o aparecimento de processos individuais e colectivos de mudança na comunidade.</description>
